Resett (Norway): the anti-Russian riots in Georgia

Georgian capital of Tbilisi for the last week turned into the arena for the anti-Russian riots. The speech of Sergey Gavrilov, the deputy of the Russian State Duma and the head of the Inter-parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy (IPAO) from a tribune of the Georgian parliament was on June 20 the alleged cause. In reply representatives of the Georgian opposition stormed a tribune and banished Gavrilov together with colleagues from the Russian delegation.

In the evening on June 20 near the building of parliament gathered from five to seven thousand protesters with the requirement to dismiss the head of the Parliament and other high-ranking politicians. Protesters tried to take the building by storm and threw stones into police officers. Law enforcement officers applied tear gas and opened fire with rubber bullets. 240 people including 80 police officers were wounded.

After battle at walls of parliament protesters made an unsuccessful repelled attempt to storm the Russian consulate.

The next days were celebrated by new demonstrations and protests which forced the chairman of the parliament to resign. Demonstrations had openly anti-Russian character: participants called the authorities by "the Russian puppets" and burned down the Russian flags. It was reported about attacks on the Russian tourists. Against the background of demonstrations a number of parties got the anti-Russian slogans again and condemned the Russian occupation of the Georgian territory.

The former president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili from the shelter in Ukraine — in the native land he is wanted on a charge of abuse of power and corruption — called for overthrow of the government.

Among protesters , most likely, there are also Ukrainian Nazis — in any case, on opposition rallies fly the Ukrainian flags.

In response to the anti-Russian riots Putin signed the resolution forbidding to the Russian airlines to fly to Georgia since July 8.

The anti-Russian demonstrations having something in common with manifestations of russophobia in the Baltics and in Ukraine testify to the anti-Russian spirit of the Georgian elite and a part of the population. It is one more proof that they simply do not understand why Georgia in general exists.

From Islamization and destruction Georgia was saved by Russia — as, however, and Armenia, one more Christian kingdom in the Caucasian region on which Turks and Persians threaded at the same time. To be exempted from the Perso-Turkish dominion, the Georgian tsar Irakli II in 1783 signed the treatise Of St. George with the Russian Empire about transition under the Russian protectorate. To relief Tbilisi, Russia at the beginning of the 19th century constructed the military road through all Caucasus. It cost Russia a bloody conflict with Chechens and other Muslim mountaineers which lasted up to the 1860th. Having become a part of the highest Russian estate, in the 19th century the Georgian nobility was Europeanized, and the European culture rushed to Georgia. So the way of Georgia to Europe went through Russia. In Soviet period the standard of living in Georgia (by the way, in the Baltics and in Ukraine too) was higher, than in other Soviet republics — including RSFSR. In Georgia the Soviet elite had a rest, it had a number of health resorts and hotels. Georgian wine and other products was in great demand.

Disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991 became for Georgia as much a catastrophe as for many other Soviet republics. The country lost the export market and other economic relations. And because of attempt of Tbilisi to deprive some regions of autonomy entered during the Soviet period a civil war broke out.

In 2008 the then president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, the extreme nationalist, disposed over the attack on the separatist Republic of South Ossetia and related war with Russia, disintegration of uniform Georgia and declaration of independence by South Ossetia and Abkhazia — one more broken-away republic became its result.

After fall of the regime of Saakashvili in 2012-13 more pragmatic Georgian leaders tried to restore the relations with Russia — not least, for the economic reasons. But as showed by recent anti-Russian demonstrations, it is easy to destroy these efforts on normalization of the relations.

Meanwhile, Georgia is simply forced to cooperate with Russia — if the country does not want to turn a nothing place or to become a part of the Middle East or even the Islamic world. Russia for Georgia also the important economic partner. And inflow of the Russian tourists and export of wine and other products to the northern neighbor hold the Georgian economy afloat. To trade with Europe and the rest of the world Georgia can only through the Black Sea. And the Black Sea after reunion of the Crimea with Russia in 2014 appeared under control of Moscow.

Sober Georgian politicians understand it. And their desire to support with Russia at least the normal economic relations unites the senior generation of Georgians. They still found Soviet period nice and would like more strong links to Russia and other former Soviet republics. However the young Georgians who grew up after disintegration of the Soviet Union do not share the Soviet nostalgia of the senior generation and to the attitude towards Russia have no warm feelings. And therefore it is easier for them to fall a victim of the anti-Russian promotion of the West which is dexterously used by U.S. intelligence.

In fact I don’t have an opinion about this so far. Initially the protests started and were reported as it were against the gay pride parade and then the narrative switched backed by photos of rather small flag-burning groups with anti-Russian slogans.
I thought it was an influence operation on part of the Georgian government to make it look like there is no anti-gay protest but an anti-Russian instead.

Anti-Russian sentiment in Georgia isn’t entirely surprising, given the centuries of Russian occupation, combined with the 1993 massacre of tens of thousands of Georgians during Russia’s successful attempt to detach Abkhazia from Georgia, in order to be able to invade Georgia at will. This came in useful in 2008, when Russian forces did invade from Abkhazia.

[By 1 August 2008, South Ossetian separatists had begun shelling Georgian villages, with a sporadic response from Georgian peacekeepers in the area.[31][32][33][34][35] Artillery attacks by pro-Russian separatists broke a 1992 ceasefire agreement.[36][37] To put an end to these attacks and restore order, the Georgian Army was sent to the South Ossetian conflict zone on 7 August.[38] Georgians took control of most of Tskhinvali, a separatist stronghold, in hours.

Russian troops had illicitly crossed the Russo-Georgian state border and advanced into the South Ossetian conflict zone by 7 August before the Georgian military response.[37][39][40][41][42] Russia accused Georgia of “aggression against South Ossetia”,[38] and launched a large-scale land, air and sea invasion of Georgia on 8 August with the pretext of “peace enforcement” operation.[43] Russian and South Ossetian forces fought Georgian forces in and around South Ossetia for several days, until Georgian forces retreated. Russian and Abkhaz forces opened a second front by attacking the Kodori Gorge held by Georgia. ]

[In the long run it proved to be a very poor decision for Russia to save Georgia from destruction by Islam.

There wouldn’t be Stalin and Beria to start with.]

The US saved Europe from the Germans and the Russians. The reason no European politician became a US president? The US did not annex any European country. The standard Russian excuse for armed conquest is the rescue of a territory from some threat. Maybe Russia will soon save European Jews from Ukrainian Nazis by conquering Ukraine and toppling its elected Jewish leaders.

“” “” Maybe Russia will soon save European Jews from Ukrainian Nazis by conquering Ukraine and toppling its elected Jewish leaders.”” “”

Why would it? The way Russia divested out from Ukraine over last few years and still divesting is an indicator to the countrary.

Georgia is shooting itself in the foot right now too.

None of this is true. Where did you come up with these ideas? I am drinking Nabeglavi which I purchased on Amazon, after taking to it while in Georgia.

I don’t have time to respond to your propaganda now, but I will later.

“” “” Haha Georgia will NEVER become Islamic. You don’t know Georgians.”” “”

They had a fat chance to become Islamic or extinct and you know full well it wasn’t up to them to miss it.
Which is evident by your post #10.

God will always protect her people and Georgia is the most Christian place I have ever visited. After that NATO was in Tbilisi last time Russia tried to invade. There is nothing in history suggesting Russia ever did anything but blow up their gas lines and bomb them. Your posts of lies are just that.

Those tanks sent by Russia ten years ago were full of hired chechens because Russians refused to attack their fellow Orthodox.
My son is Georgian by adoption and I have many close friends there, always asking me to return, as I am an honorary Georgian, they say. I have been all over the country and even considered moving there.
You know nothing about Georgians.
