Actually, stop talking about the 2nd Amendment (or any of the first 10 Amendments really) as the “giver” of rights. Governments don’t confer rights, because then they can also take them away. Rights are inalienable, so even though they may trample them, doesn’t mean they still don’t exist. The populace just needs to stand up for them.

Think about stop lights.
I used a similar (and I think better) analogy when explaining this to my jr high students. The government says I can use only the right half of the road. I give up freedom of driving on the whole roadbut by only using the right half of the road, the road is much more usable for everybody. Kids saw the point immediately. We have to give up some freedom (ah, but how much?) to live in a functioning society.
