We Find It Ourselves

“When God observes a self-reliant, determined attitude toward finding a solution to a problem, He makes sure this happens: We find it ourselves.”

While attending the funeral service for a friend who committed suicide, I sat beside his daughter.

“Read this page in his diary,” she said. “My father always kept one of these diary notebooks in his pocket and penned daily entries.”

In the entry dated the day before his death, he wrote, “On any given day at any given moment, any given 1,000,000 people, of whom I might be one, are pleading for God’s mercy and help, and 999,999 of them are more worthy of His attention than I, so why bother praying? He will never hear me.”

God hears all prayers and answers them. It might be yes, it might be no. Or it might be wait. This person was looking for answers and was given none. Perhaps the problems lie within our inability to hear God. He is speaking loudly, all the time, but we are wrapped up in our worldly (animal) soul and cannot, or will not listen. He speaks to us through his words, deeds and circumstances. When I take a breath of air into my lungs, I know that it is God breathing into me. When I walk in the forest, I see him in connection with everything if I take the time to listen and to see. Every morning, I give thanks for the gift of another day on earth. But that is just me. Explaining suicide is a very difficult challenge. Our time on this earth is so brief compared to eternity, but everyone has their place, even if it is interrupted by suicide. The passing of this girl’s father had meaning, and perhaps she will never know what it was. Perhaps he was sending his daughter a message that she should find out what God is saying when he was never able to hear God’s words himself. A tragedy indeed.

In his book, “The Power of Silence,” Cardinal Sarah observes that God is most active in silence. He created the universe and each of our lives in silence and without being seen or visible to anyone else. Yes, He hears every prayer and acts, unseen in most cases. Only much later can we see what He was doing and the reasons for it.

Yep - as my wife says, God has 3 answers to prayers:
Yes
No
If you insist
