Shut Your Pi Hole and Have a Slice

Happy Pi Day. ABC News assembled this informational video to mark the date (3-14) that represents Alfred Einstein’s birthday and the first 3 digits of an infinite number:

The accompanying article chronicles the saga of the Indiana amateur mathematician who once convinced the  Indiana legislature to introduce a bill defining pi as 3.2. It nearly passed. While an interesting story of the lack of mathematical knowledge - even a century ago - the comments on the article prove even more enlightening. As of this morning Every. Single. Comment. on the thread was some sort of disdainful swipe at the intelligence of President Trump and/or his supporters.

Unfortunately that’s where we find the country on Pi Day, 2019; the only constant is Trump hate.

Orange-man pie bad!

So in an attempt to heal the deep rift that divides America I would like to propose that we leave mathematics out of the equation all together and change Pi Day to Pie Day. Millions of people, including the Fox and Friends morning crew, apparently think that’s what it’s about anyway so why not make it official and eliminate at least one opportunity to argue over political ideology?

Better for one day to argue about America’s favorite pie

than politics.

Because who doesn’t love pie?

Being from KY, never heard anyone making a peanut butter pie as per the chart. And also per the chart, peanuts are not nuts.

if month 3 and day 14 is pi day, then pi moment would be 0.14927 * 24 hours, or 3:49am. So we already missed it

Today is also my son’s 30th birthday. His IQ is very high but so far unused...lol. I hope I live long enough to see him use it. My baby boy and I do love him, but....time to grow up...sigh

3.14 ............ Pi is a transcendental figure without resolution. I think it’s been computed to millions of digits , with no repeating patterns ever found. Perhaps with modern computers it can be calculated to an infinite number of digits, if enough resources are devoted to the task.

Does you son have an aptitude for computers? The hot industry right now, the one with the most shortage of workers is in cyber security. If you son is interested in becoming a penetration tester (legal hacker), have him reach out to me. I can point him in the right direction to get started.

An infinite enumeration, eh? ;-P

I once downloaded a text file containing the computed value of PI to twenty million digits and searched the text for certain phrases.

I found my social security number and every telephone number I have ever had, somewhere in the text.

Cue the creepy science fiction movie music here...

Sounds like Yahoo. Full of Huffington Post folks who spew hatred like that.

I once downloaded a text file containing the computed value of PI to twenty million digits and searched the text for certain phrases. I found my social security number and every telephone number I have ever had, somewhere in the text.

I'm calling B.S. on the claim about finding your SS number!

Twenty million digits can be segmented into approx. 20 million different nine-digit numbers (to be exact, they can be segmented into 19,999,992 different 9-digit numbers, because the final eight digits are useless by themselves).

(This isn't pertinent to my refutation, but: Assuming that even numbers like, e.g., 000-00-0001 and 999-99-9999 could be valid Social Security Numbers, there can be a maximum of only 999,999,999 different SS numbers in total. Of course, in actual fact, there are restrictions on valid SS numbers.)

I shall assume that roughly 200 million people have been issued unique SS numbers. But only 20 million (10% of the 19,999,992 mentioned above) will therefore be able to find their numbers in the first 20 million digits of pi.

The likelihood that you are one of those 20 million is thus about 10%.

Q.E.D.

Well lucky me then. It is in there. (No I am not going to post my SSN).

Try your own SSN. You may be quite surprised at the results.

How about posting your Credit Card Number?

Try your own SSN. You may be quite surprised at the results.

Would you believe I found it by simply eyeballing it?

Pi Searcher

If you trust it ...

I searched my SSN, several phone numbers, came up empty. My birth data, expressed either as YYYYMMDD or DDMMYYYY is in there.
