This Is How You Get Trump
The Washington Free Beacon ^ | February 24, 2019 | Robert VerBruggen

The plight of the rural white working class, especially its males, burst onto the national radar rather suddenly. Opioid overdoses finally caught the attention of the mainstream media a few years back. And of course the GOP primary win, and ultimate election, of Donald Trump brought even more attention to this demographic.

Are they economically battered victims of globalization? Were they left behind in a whirlwind of cultural changes? Or maybe they're just bitter bigots who can't stand to see women and minorities outperforming them.

In Alienated America, Timothy P. Carney of the Washington Examiner highlights a neglected element of the story: the decline of strong communities with dense social ties, and in particular the decline of organized religion. Carney doesn't prove this factor deserves quite the importance he places on it—indeed, how could one possibly disentangle it from the raft of other social and economic changes this country has seen in the past half-century? But he does an excellent job of weaving his narrative together with on-the-ground reporting and relevant academic research.

In the book's first chapter, Carney profiles his own village of Chevy Chase, Md., where social bonds are quite strong, even overbearing.

Carney also powerfully argues that the loss of religion has a role in the plight of the working class. Contrary to popular wisdom, church attendance has fallen much more among the lesser-educated (though those on the other end of the spectrum are catching up). And especially in America, strong communities have more often than not revolved around churches.

God in our daily lives kept American families together, and in turn villages and towns and medium sized cities. That meant daily prayer in schools, which was common until the 60s, Church on Sunday, and home prayer every day {especially at meal time and bed time}.

If you have no sense of right or wrong, you will invent one...and you will be wrong, eg there is no gender at birth, only by choice. Bullshit.

You either believe in God and accept Him in your life or you don't, there is no logic nor reason that can 'prove' His existence.

Not impressed.

Almost no consideration of the political aspects.

Assumes progressivism is both beneficial and benevolent.

That is one perspective. It is true that there is a class of elites who have gathered into places like Chevy Chase MD, and that they apparently only talk to each other, and that the class of trophy wives who accompany them need to be kept busy, lest the get into mischief of one sort or another.

There was a statement:

“That attitude from Chevy Chase-dwelling elites, like empty churches and closing factories, is part of what got us Trump. But it’s almost certainly the truth.”

That misses a bit I think. If you sell out your own country and fellow citizens for a buck you can make a buck, but you have still sold out your own country and fellow citizens. On the one hand American workers have been displaced in droves by telecommuting workers in other countries. On the other hand, American workers are expected to move to places like the West Coast where there is an existing severe housing crisis that will eat up anything they make in the way of wages.

It is not the wisdom and general awesomeness of the Chevy Chase elite that has led to their position. It is the rent-seeking and greed. For years the focus has been on finding incrementally the very least in a controlled game that can induce the voters to vote for Chevy Chase MD uniparty choice I or II. Trump broke ranks, and it is likely that for that betrayal he will never be forgiven by this unfit and feckless group of people. And that is just the thing. If you look at history, the unfit and feckless routinely make it into positions of power and barring the intervention of brash people, they tend to die there, and quite horribly. Trump is saving their bacon as much as ours. Leadership is only good leadership when it is sustainable leadership. Leadership that destroys the led is not good leadership, or for that matter leadership at all, it is parasitical.

Chevy Chas MD is located right at the edge of the taxation capital of the United States of America. Yes, there is going to be quite a lot of money floating around.

Isn't Chevy Chase VERY white?

Secondly, rich upper class/ upper middle class areas have more two parent homes. As someone put it, these areas when they are politically Liberal don't preach what they practice: (1) Finish school. (2) Don't have kids before you finish school. (3) Have kids in a marriage.

Chevy Chase is very Liberal, but they don't practice the pathologies that they advocate that we tolerate.

A lot of these folks admire movie stars and rock stars who for 35 years have lectured audiences that marriage is just a piece of worthless paper, religion is for suckers, etc. A lot of their audiences believed this and so without God or love, wealth or education, they were pretty much sunk.

Correct. The article refuses to acknowledge the reality that big government is the culprit. The “safety net” does not provide safety. It condemns recipients to slavery. Social justice in the form of LBTG, abortion, and control of speech do not provide justice. They are weapons of injustice.
As the state assumes the role of GOD the need for GOD diminishes. Indeed the state finds itself at war with GOD. Very little is right with current government. Much is destructive of culture and stability.

Without faith in God, government becomes god.

Normal people tend to spend their time raising their families, and having fun with their friends. This puts them at a disadvantage against people who spend their days in a ceaseless pursuit of power.

This is why the Founders wanted to keep government small and without much power, because powerful institutions tend to attract psychopaths who crave power over others.
