The 24 hour news cycle, smart phones, and social media is definitely part of it. Most people that care about culture and politics vastly overestimate the number of people who care like they do. One look at the eligible voter turnout for the last 100 years kind of proves it.
It’s also hard for me to imagine a civil war occurring while the poorest people are the most likely to be obese and are the most entertained poor people ever. Maybe there’s a first time for everything.

Poor people dont start civil wars. They can be tools for others, but they dont start them.
And all civil wars are started by an activist minority.
Its the same scenario over and over - start violence, provoke a reaction, wave the bloody shirt, radicalize more people, do something else, provoke worse reactions, until you get a real war, a real revolution.
