I’m probably picking nits but ISIL was 0Zero’s term. He used it instead of ISIS because the “Islamic State of Iraq and Syria” was a reminder of his abject failure in Iraq and Syria which were the ONLY two states in which they held territory. HE created ISIS by his own incompetence. And they NEVER were even close to “the Levant,” as they would NEVER defeat and take Israel.

Gareth Porter) and he is the most vile human being I’ve ever met (and that includes members of the KKK/White racist organizations, Croatian Ustashi mass murderers, high-ranking No. Vietnamese/VC - later defectors), Black extremists, and most of Porter’s fellow members of the Hanoi War Crimes Denial Club (Gran, Goodfellow, maybe Marr, Kahin, Ackland, etc), as well as key Soviet KGB disinformation operative, I.F. Stone, among others from the lowest forms of human life (including some other journalists like Don Luce).
Porter is a traitor, pure and simple. His writings defending Hanoi’s aggression and mass murder/genocide in So. Vietnam, Laos, and even Cambodia (until the maost Khmer Rouge took over the killing and elevated it to Mao’s ultimate form of “class genocide” (I knew people who were slaughtered in it, just like my relatives were slaughtered by the Nazis during WW2).
His Cornell paper, “The Myth of the Bloodbath” (in Vietnam, both North and South), 1972, is a classic work of disinformation, a smear job on people who saw it first hand and wrote about it, and the product of a very sick, uncurable leftist mind.
His paper came out about the same time as a major Senate Internal Security Subcommittee, Sen. Judiciary Committee compendium report on Communist terrorist in Vietnam (since 1925), and was entitled “The Human Cost of Communism in Vietnam”.
It was the third in a series of SISS reports with “The Human Cost of Communism in (the Soviet Union, Red China) series, the first two being by Prof. Robert Conquest and Prof. Richard Walker).
Somehow Porter got Wash. Post military reporter Charles (?)Wilson to believe him and publish Porter’s smear job against No. Vietnamese official Hoang Van Chi, who actually lived in No. Vietnam during the 1950’s and saw/tried to document the extent of Ho and Giap’s crushing of dissent there, including in Ho’s own home province of Nghe An.
All Ho, Giap and le Duan did was to imitate Mao’s “Let a Hundred Flowers Bloom” head-fake campaign of allowing their people some outlets for protests over communist government oppressive policies, and when outted, they were killed in the tens, if not hundreds of thousands in NVN, and by the millions in Red China.
Porter, as a student of Asia, knew all this, or WAS SUPPOSED to know all of this from his studies, but his mentor Prof. George McT. Kahin was himself a hardcore communist sympathizer going back as far as the late 40’s, early 50’s in Indonesia (according the veteran international journalist Sol Sanders who knew him in Indonesia and elsewhere).
Porter and his Hanoi For Lunch Bunch of propagandists often appeared before congressional committees, a list of which can be found at www.keywiki.org, search under “Hanoi Lobby” and BlueLinks to “American Visitors to North Vietnam/Hanoi During the War” or as listed in James McGovern’s book “The Loyal Opposition: Americans in North Vietnam, 1965-1972” (it’s real name should have been “The Disloyal Opposition: Hanoi’s Sympathizer American Helpers/Fools and Traitors”)
By the way, Porter failed to produce documents that Chairman Clement Zablocki (House Foreign Affairs/International Affairs Committee) ordered him to provide his committee in the 1975 hearings on aid to Vietnam.
Later, Porter and company tried to destroy/throw out their records from the Hanoi-Lobby (church funded) “Indochina Resource Center) which would have exposed their absolute complicity in aiding Hanoi’s propaganda operations in the US during the war, and even afterwards (Friends of Hanoi Organizing Committee or a similar group name like that.
Fortunately not all these documents were destroyed.
Later, Porter shifted his focus in the 1980’s onward against American interests in the Middle East, esp. against Israel, and has been a writer for or published/reviewed in the old “Saudi Arabia Lobby” monthly magazine “The Washington Report on the Middle East”. (It is worth reading this magazine because it shows the strength and breadth of the anti-Israel, silently pro-Hamas/Hezbollah/Iran/Fatah movement from the old anti-Israel State Department clique which teamed up with the fake Palestinian existence movement.
Porter’s goal, as established in the second paragraph of his “American Conservative” article, is to get the US out of the Middle East so that Russia, Iran and its proxies, plus the fascist regime of Assad, can create their own anti-Western totalitarian hegemony against the West, eventually leading to the destruction of Israel.
Porter’s bloodstained hands are all over this new “disinformation” operation against the U.S.
While I do not want to comment too much on the Mattis/Kelly versus Trump Syria policy issue, (as this is not my area of major research), I see the same pro-Hanoi disinformation/defeat the US campaign of Porter just moved to another part of the world.
Why the hell American Conservative published this article is beyond me unless they are just as anti-Trump as the Left is.
It is the equivalent of say Human Events or Levin TV publishing/presenting the work of Fritz Kunh (the German-American Bund, pro-Hitler leader in America) because they both didn’t want the US to get involved in WW2.
Politics makes strange bedfellows, and in this case, more than strange bedfellows. When you lie down with a veteran supporter of No. Vietnamese aggression, slaughter and conquest of 3 countries in SE Asia, and now a supporter of the Syria/Iran/Russian Axis of conquest and slaughter in the Middle East, you wake up with flea bites on your ass and your soul.
I fully expect verbal retaliation from Porter and his defenders, but the truth is the truth no matter how hard they try to put lipstick on their treasonous activities and total “Indochina Genocide Denial” propaganda efforts to protect Hanoi, its puppet Pathet Lao, and its once-time associated Khmer Rouge movement for their “war crimes” and “crimes against humanity” in Indochina.
With one major totalitarian victory notched onto their belt, the old Hanoi Lobby is seeking another notch in the Middle East, no matter how many more lives would be lost to genocidal aggression against Israel, Jordan and even Saudi Arabia by the “Axis of Evil” - Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas, Fatah,Russia and Syria.

Knowing Porter, that was my reading on his agenda as well (and like you, I'm not commenting on the validity of his analysis of infighting among Trump's advisors here--a broken clock is right twice a day--just on Porter's own agenda). He worked with the Soviets under their regime, and has continued to work with the pro-Castro lobby since the fall of the Berlin Wall; and during the War on Terror he and his colleagues at IPS, VIPS, etc. have continued to follow the old Soviet policy of collaborating with the anti-Semitic lobby (case in point, Joseph Wilson). He seems to be exploiting the controversy over Trump's Syria pull-out as a "wedge" issue to gain publicity among conservatives, following the pattern of Lyndon LaRouche and a number of disinformation agents associated with VIPS.

I had not heard of Porter in a long while. I suppose he does want the US gone from the ME or more correctly the people paying him wish that. US interests do not require US ground presence, The resources of Israel and the current Saudi leadership can do that with US support and the USAF standing quietly behind them. The presence of US ground forces in most of the ME presents K Street with a constant opportunity to push for mission creep and nation building nostrums that help feed interminable wars for the US Army and Marines. Porter is scum but the only thing US armed forces and the CIA have done in the ME under GWB and Barry is to create an arc of smashed states that will be in armed turmoil indefinitely.
