Irish Alzheimer's ... you forget everything but the grudge!
I recognize Schilling with President Bush, but who is that with John Effing Kerry?
Former GM-—Theo Epstein.
..
Oh, I care! But in a more detached way now, since I’ve lived in Florida for years.
I lived on Boylston St. in Boston in the early 70’s. My apartment was on the Fenway end of Boylston- I could open my window and hear the bat hit the ball. I went to games often, cheap tickets, eats and beer, they were great years. When I moved to New York I’d go to Mets games while continuing to “hate the Yankees”...because that’s what you do if you’re a Red Sox fan.
I reflect now that I was truly fortunate to live when the only thing politicized, were politics. The left has ruined sports too.
Meanwhile ..100 games! Go Red Sox:)
Back in the day, people would go to the game dressed up, and men would throw their fedoras onto the ice.
They would pick up all the hats, put them in a big bin, and people would rummage around and get their hat back on their way out after the game...:)
Sigh. How things have changed. My friend just gave me some reel-to-reel tapes that his father recorded off the television of the Bruins Stanley Cup games vs. St Lois and the New York Rangers, plus one of the Whalers championship in 1973! I had a great time digitizing them for him, with all the television commercials included! “Schaefer, is the...one beer to have, when you’re having more than one!”
But the most interesting thing was listening to the announcers before the St. Louis Game 4, talking about how the fans have high expectations to win the cup, and were entering the Boston Garden bringing along bottles of champagne!
The police gently relieved them of the champagne as they entered the Boston Garden, tagged it, gave them a receipt, and allowed them to pick it up after the game!
How times have changed.
I know some people have developed a puritanical distaste for any pastimes except the ones THEY decide are good. Well, as the Aussies like to say: “Good on Em”. That’s their business, except that they have to constantly remind everyone how great they are now that they have dumped sports.
I remember watching that series as a 9-year-old boy with my father. I remember the St. Louis Blues series too and I believe the Maple Leafs were the other team that the Bruins had to get by to get to the Finals that year.
During those years, my father worked for Butler Aviation and the Bruins often chartered flights through them. So my father got to know some of the players personally. They used to hit the bars a lot in those days and my father would sometimes be there as well. On one particular night, Wayne Cashman got so drunk that he was taken into custody and put in the jailhouse in the North End. It was all sort of "off the books" so never made it into the papers. The police were actually looking out for the Bruins and were helping to keep them out of serious trouble.
Anyway, that night, Cashman was allowed to make a phone call and he used it to call a local Chinese restaurant to place a large order to be delivered and shared the food with the jailhouse officers.
Now that was a completely different era.
During the early 1970s, the Bruins had the best team in all of hockey. But as one of the Bruins said (think it was Derek Sanderson), they would have won 5 Stanley cups during that era if they didn't party so hard.
I know you’re all hopped up about the sox but 102 out of 126 makes winning 100 very common
Good for BoSox!
They had a good series, with the Astros, recently.
Fenway is one of my fave ballparks...with the intimidating Green Monstah, and the shortest and longest points in any MLB ball field. I love seeing the red “Ted Williams” seat, in the sea of green.
But not so common. In the entire history of MLB (since 1892), has only happened 102 times. Given an average of 20 teams in MLB each year, that's 102 out of 2,520 chances for a percentage of .04%
So not that common. And the Red Sox have 16 more games to build on those 100 victories.
no that’s not what I meant. You are changes seasons into games and them down g the math wrong. I said nothing about games per season. if you win a hundred games in 126 seasons then it happens 8 out of every ten years. In fact since so many seasons before had 154 games the chances now are more that some team will win 100
Still not that common. 99% of the time, a team does not have a 100 win season.
We are not big Cardinals fans. ⚾️😢
IF there is a 100 game winner in 102 seasons you’re numbers are way off. The odds are 8 on 10 some team will win a hundred. That’s as easy as I can make it and more since we have 162 games not 154. . Maybe someone will come along that is abetter teacher of remedial math
Good luck
I can understand that!
Lets hope for a Boston sweep.
There were 126 MLB seasons since 1892 and only 102 teams have won a hundred games during that time. So not that common. Especially given there have been 30 teams playing each year for quite some time. So it’s a rare thing.
As I said good luck.
He actually had in his cellar the actual suitcase type recorder it was acquired on, and boy, was it in crappy shape!
When he dropped it off with the tapes, he didn't include a power cord, and the battery compartment was so corroded that was never going to work. I took a regular power cable from some computer component and shaved it with an exacto knife until I could get it in the hole, and had to fudge with the power sheaths to get them over the pins, but...click! (I fully recognized this would have voided the warranty!)
The yellowing record level indicators lit up, and I even tried using the earphone jack, but I found that the sound was so fast that it sounded like high pitched static.
This was some kind of dual speed, and I figured he must have recorded it on the slower speed to make the tapes last longer, but...that speed wouldn't work. I ended up cracking open the thing, and here is what I saw:
The pulley belt was so cracked, stretched and desiccated, that it was unusable. So I scrounged around for a rubber band...:) and that worked! Then, when I tried recording, I found out the volume controls were so corroded all I could get was static, so I gave it up and my buddy threw the thing out.
I got a reel-to-reel from another friend, set it up with a little monitor and computer, and that became my digitizing station:
It still recorded WAY too fast (about 3 times regular chipmunk speed) so I took it into an audio program and slowed it down until it sounded normal...I had a lot of fun...:)
Fortunately luck is common in my life!
