Breakthrough In Italy: The Most 'Outsider" Parties Move To Form A new Government

"Italy's anti-establishment Five Star Movement and the right-wing League party say they have made significant steps to forming a government, more than two months after a general election...."

BBC News report May 10th, 2018

"Let me say I've worked with both of these parties in the European Parliament. Both of these groups and I've been president of those groups and these people have served with me and I really want to see this coalition forming...."

Nigel Farage on "The Nigel Farage Show"-LBC May 10th, 2018

There was an "inconclusive" result in Italy's general election on March 4th wit the standard 'coalitions' of the 'Left' and 'Right' failing, especially the 'Left' one which had ruled the country.

But emerging with the greatest percentage of the popular vote were the political outsiders of the Five Star Movement led by stand up comedian Beppe Grillo.

Attempts to form a new government had flatered with the "Right" coalition leader Silvio Berlusconi balking at the notion of his coalition governing with Five Star.

But now Berlusconi has relented to allow The League, a pro-free market European Union skeptic party in his coalition, to move forward and join Five Star in efforts to form a new government.

Italian President Sergi Mattarella has given the two parties until Sunday to form a government but not without offering some critical remarks saying it would be wrong 'to look to 19th Century solutions' to deal with '21st Century problems'.

Italian markets fell at the prospect of such a new government being formed with business elites fearful of anti-EU policies and the Five Star's promotion of 'income support' for poor Italians living in the South of the country.

But The League has a strong pro-business position including promotion of a 15 percent flat tax rate which would benefit big business.

On paper, the coalition of the 5 SM and League commands majorities in both houses of Italy's parliament (352 of 630 in the lower, 170 of 315 in the upper).

All of this will present an interesting scenario for the EU representative election in the summer 2019 period.

“19th century solutions to 21st century problems”

Most 21st century problems are the result of 20th socialist century “solutions”.

All that matters is if they keep the bearded invaders out, or the Colliseum will become a muzzy raping ground.

We have had conservative politicians here propose a flat tax of one sort or another. Here, we have Italians viewing a flat tax as "pro big business"? Is this a fair criticism?

Here’s why this is stunning:

The Northern League is in a coalition with Forza Italia. Because of proportional voting, they don’t have any reason not to both run candidates for the same districts. What makes them a coalition is that they agree to support the leader of the party with the most votes to be Prime Minister. In a shocker, that’s the Northern League. In exchange, they get cabinet posts in that administration.

But Forza Italia, if I understand this news correctly, have given permission for the Northern League to give those posts to the 5-Star Party, in order to bring the 5-Star Party into a coalition needed to obtain the 50% needed to form a stable government.

I’m not an expert, but I think that given the redistributionist Italian system, they consider any tax cut to be favorable to businesses with multiple investors. That is, corporations. They’re suggesting that single proprietorships won’t benefit. (Probably on the basis that they reinvest income into their business?) And so therefore, because it benefits businesses bigger than one employee more, that’s benefitting “big business.”

But honestly, I don’t know if Italy does anything more that the U.S. to allow the living earned by people running single proprietorships to be taxed less.

I wonder if this kind of thing could happen here in a scenario when someone like Hitlery had won following obummers hard left terms and taken the country even further left. Probably lead to a civil war. Sometimes I think all roads eventually lead to another civil war. It’s inevitable.

Hardly worth the bother reporting...how long is this government going to last? I mean, Italy has had about twice as many post-WWII gov’ts as the US in all its history...

The League is certainly concerned about the immigration issue and we shall see how its influence works.

People who support the Five Star in the south are on the front lines of that matter and see the threat to the benefits governent doles out for them.

Its a victory for anti-EU forces. One can understand why some would not like to talk about this story so that;s exactly why I posted it.

My comment was directed to the short lifespan of Italian governments - not whether they are pro or anti EU...perhaps I was not clear enough in that regard. But in either case, pro or anti, will they be around long enough to actually get something done in that direction?

Will this new anti-EU gov’t protect the borders and kick all the illegals out (if they actually want to and can do that) before the next gov’t is elected...?

Thing is, those measures take time. And time is a commodity few Italian gov’ts have ever had. I.e., my point in the first place.
