That appointee shall be of the same political party as the person vacating the office and shall serve until the person elected at the next general election is qualified and assumes office. If the person vacating the office changed political party affiliations after taking office, the person who is appointed to fill the vacancy shall be of the same political party that the vacating officeholder was when the vacating officeholder was elected or appointed to that office.

Supposedly, McCain has given Ducey a list of successors that would be acceptabe to him (like that would matter after his body’s cold, but we all know how gladhanding power works).
Betcha Martha McSally’s on the list. Then McConnell could help the democrat replace Flake. Best of both worlds from his perspective:Ward defeated and McSally in the Senate.

How does one change party? To change his voter registration, presumably he could sign a piece of paper. But then his signature or mental competence could be disputed. For the Senate itself, I wonder what its procedures are. To caucus with a party is a decision made at the beginning of the term. To change that, would have he have to show up in Washington (which presumably he cannot do)?

If McCain dies after May 30 watch the governor appoint the Widow McCain to the seat. That is, by all accounts, what the family wants.
