Last week the nation watched in horror as the body count of Broward school children and staff doubled by the minute.
The very next day the FBI admitted they had failed to act on a vital lead that explicitly detailed the mass murderer's intentions to kill people at his school. Immediately, Florida Gov. Rick Scott called for FBI Director Christopher Wray to resign in the wake of the Parkland school shooting.
While the FBI apologized and issued a standard vague statement, Gov. Scott said Wray must resign, saying acknowledging a mistake isnt going to cut it.. "An apology will never bring these 17 Floridians back to life or comfort the families who are in pain. The families will spend a lifetime wondering how this could happen, and an apology will never give them the answers they desperately need, Scott said in a statement.
Days later, many of the facts have emerged and it's time to explain to these families why their loved ones are dead or wounded. It's time to tell how the shooting actually did happen and why it was allowed to occur.
On that fateful day, February 14, the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) response was not to pursue the shooter since the officers were not moving to protect innocents at the Parkland HS. In fact, Cruz chose the time which he preferred to quit shooting since he was under no pressure from anyone to stop. He could have killed a few dozen more students during the time of non-response from the sheriff's officers. He decided to quit shooting and blend in to escape his rampage.
But getting back to the prevention of school fatalities and mass murder, The BSO is guilty of the same original error as the FBI - failure to report and investigate a gravely serious life-threatening tip. Except the sheriff's mistakes were much more grievous than the one time (admitted) error made by the FBI.
Shouldn't Gov. Scott be publicly calling for Broward Sheriff Israel's resignation?... Especially since he has the legal power to fire his Floridian subordinate law enforcement officer? Why didn't Sheriff Israel confess and apologize for his departmental errors with mishandling a lethal lead, as the FBI immediately had in the wake of the shooting? That would have been the honest and open thing to have done.
Unlike the FBI, the BSO is right in the heart of Broward County and was in a uniquely perfect position to intervene on more than several occasions. They received the same desperate calls containing the same ominous deadly information at the local sheriff's office three months prior to the shooting as well as in January of 2017. They failed to process all the explicit leads 'served on a silver platter' to them from concerned students, teachers, parents, neighbors, family members and friends who knew Cruz. One tip, phoned in on November 1, 2017 actually came from thousands of miles away -from Massachusetts, the woman was so concerned the Cruz was destined to be a killer, she wanted his gun collection removed by the BSO.
More importantly, the Broward school district housed the sheriff's School Resource Deputy in position at the high school to ensure school safety. The Broward Sheriff's Office had multiple occasions to intercede and stop Cruz. They failed for years to contain Nikolas Cruz as well as other dangerous juveniles that haunt the Broward schools as the result of a 'Sanctuary for juvenile criminal behavior' policy installed throughout the district in 2013.
Scott Israel, as head of the BSO, should be called upon to resign by Florida's governor in the wake of the Parkland mass shooting. It's justified to make that call and announce to the families why the system failed. Just as the FBI admitted their error in the transfer of information, Sheriff Israel's multiple errors are too numerous to count and a gross form of negligence. He needs to man-up and admit his failure to the Parkland families, they deserve to know the truth.
It is fortunate that Cruz decided that he was done shooting after four minutes because no one was stopping him from shooting a few dozen more people.
The Gov. Should put pressure on the sheriff to release the dispatcher recordings...
Scott stood by while Broward and Miami became thug-friendly counties. No school expulsions unless absolutely necessary became the watchword. The inmates took over the asylum and the result... Scott should be fired.
Yes, and Cruz probably did not have to bother with an AR 15 as he would have probably achieved similar results with a simple pump action shotgun or bolt action rifle due to Sheriff Israel’s incompetence that sad day.
Sheriff Israel should beg the families not to pay him back.
"We are lions in our citizen-paid Lamborghinis
and need not EVER arise to the wailing, dying
cries of bleeding, slaughtered sheep under our care."
Scott’s”demand” is a head fake.
He knows that Wray isn’t going anywhere(because of this)
The local government was where the real “power failure” occurred but Scott is either too “Chickensh@t” or agrees with the politics of this county.
I’m tired of my party deflecting... deflecting... deflecting... instead of being strong, determined and right!(Like my President Trump!!!!)
If he and others of the GOP-e are going to act like Democrats I might as well not vote!
No. Rick Scott is letting Scott Israel destroy himself. The sheriff was elected by his constituents. Let them chew on their choices a while. Besides, the dems are going to have this guys head on a pike. They have let this one guy let a perfectly good crisis go to waste.
Resign? Why would he resign when he’s done “amazing service” to the BSO and the community?
I can only imagine what it would have been like to go through that mill as a smallish White Kid...
Or he could have used other means.
The point is:
He warned them repeatedly that he would kill and BSO failed to act.
The dogs are the only way to manage the sheep. The dogs trust me and give me their loyalty to duty. Let another person tell those dogs what to do and they will turn the teeth right back.
Sheriff Israel has no loyal dogs who trust him.
That makes me think that Failed sheriff Israel has something on the mayor. The sheriff needs to resign.
Florida’s Sunshine Laws are very good and that is why the BSO will have such a difficult time containing the truth. I think the local papers have already petitioned for transcripts.
The schools are another story, but he is 19, so maybe some stuff is available or some ticked off teacher will release some under the table.
Scott will bring the hammer down on Israel when the move is at perfect time to get maximum political mileage out of it and use it to take Nelson’s seat. Just chill out and watch.
Israel has had a ‘six-figure’ paid bodyguard for a long time. He probably drives about the Ft. Ldle in an armoured Hummer.
Everyone who could exited to private schools or home schools. Florida is very lenient and open to unaccredited schools and home schooling.
The Jewish families moved to oasis’s like Parkland or Coral Springs. Catholic & Luthern schools are full. Lots of non-religious families with kids in Catholic or Christian schools to escape the blight. Lots of tiny church schools and independent schools popped up to educate their own families and welcome the exodus from the government system.
Broward Co. Sheriff was waiting for one more call that Cruz was a bomb waiting to go off. First 23 call, no big deal. But, a 24th call, that would’ve got his attention.
Gov. Scott can fire Israel. Hes got his top cop looking into.
The Gov’s moving in the right direction.
