You might want to stay out of Ogunquit unless you like the gay crowd. Otherwise, once you get north of the “Volvo Line”, you’re in Trump country.
Interesting. I was trying to find a map of maine which segmented the blue and red counties, then spend most of our tourist dollars in the red counties. . .
Tip of the day..........Don’t do it in the winter.
Seriously, unless you love endless pine forests and dirt roads, avoid inland Maine (although there is a cool B-52 crash site outside of Rangely). Maine's beauty is all in her rocky coastline. If you like lobster the whole waterfront is dotted with lobster shacks, but if you like oysters, head for the Booth Bay area.
If it's to be your one and only trip down east then it has to be Bar Harbor. Pink granite mountains, fjords, and well maintained carriage roads for you to bike around on. If you get there at the end of July you can feast on wild blueberries as they are everywhere.
Wear a Hitlary hat and someone will buy you lunch and a beer.
The second CD Gave Trump it’s 1 electoral vote. Another Trump first ever.
A perfect time of year in Maine, bugs are mostly gone, and the days are still fairly comfortable. Go North with a packed lunch and hike into Sandy Stream pond in Baxter Park for a chance to see a Moose. Winter Harbor and the Schoodic portion of Acadia are a little quieter than Bar Harbor but they don’t have the tourist shops that Bar Harbor does.
The Maine working coast is easier to observe without the tourism when you travel East of Acadia. For a New England state, Maine is actually quite large and you can wear yourself out just getting around.
I hope you enjoy yourself. I came here almost 50 years ago as a young man, fell in love with a wonderful young woman and stayed.
At Acadia NP there’s tons of good hiking plus the normal auto touring options. It’s beautiful. If you like bicycling, there’s the old carriage roads through the park that autos aren’t allowed on. It’s a great place. Bah Haaaabaa is touristy but get just a bit out of the area and you’ll run across the places where lobstah is cheaper and blueberry pie can be found in abundance. I visited in the fall mostly, so if you go in the winter these suggestions may not work.
Ditto on Matt’s suggestion for Camden and sailing there. 5 star location.
I like the Camden / Owl’s Head area. Lighthouse at Owl’s Head. Not long after Payton Place was filmed in Camden I was there, and it’s beautiful. Some scenes in the Whitehall Inn, IIRC. (It’s been a while!)
We stay off MDI in the summer. But if you go, when you get to Ellsworth go down Water Street (SR 230) to the Goose Cove Road in Trenton. Take a left onto Goose Cove. Where it dead ends is 230 again. Go left there to Route 3. Take a right to the island. You’ll miss all the wicked bad bumper to bumper traffic that way. Go early or you risk having difficulty finding parking in BH.
Acadia National Park is a nice day trip.
Freeport, just off the highway to Bangor, is the home of LL Bean. It is the town that converted itself into an Outlet Mall.
Portland is nice.
Once you get out into the country, as you probably know, its real country.
Drive I-95 to about Bangor during Foliage season in the early fall. Lovely!
DEET is your friend. Mosquitos the size of turkey vultures.
Cape Elizabeth lighthouse by Portland. We took rt 1 tour from Portland to Booths Bay to Bar Harbor few years ago. Beautiful. We also went to Ogonquit, beatiful town and did the walk along Marginal Way. Stunning walk along the ocean and cliffs that end up in small fishing town
We stayed in Ogonquit and it was beautiful. Lot of family tourists. Some businesses are owned by gays. I would go there again especially to do Marginal way walk.
I drove twice a week from Freedom NH to Portland along ME 25 for almost two years.
All Trump signs, everywhere, and a few Confederate battle flags.
I think her Trump hat is fine.
The whale watch ship (very big boat) was great. We saw many whales, seals, and dolphins. It’s a crapshoot, but we were very lucky.
Cadillac Mountain.
if you really want to do something special, take the ferry from port clyde to monhegan island, and stay at the old hotel there. you wont regret it, one of the most beautiful and special places on the US coast.
and BTW, one of the earliest known settlements in north america by europeans, early fishing camp.
great adventure. two days on the island is plenty.
Work your way up the coastline, even go into Canada...Just keep going. Coastline is where you want to be, forget the interior.
