I’m running 10.13.1 and this bug doesn’t seem to affect me. Perhaps it only affects certain models? In any event Apple should sort it out soon. Agree this is something that never should have gotten out the door.

Agree this is something that never should have gotten out the door. If you are running as a Standard User, it won't work. You have to start from running as an Admin. . . then it works. But, most people, likely like you, are running in Standard mode where it's safer to browse the Internet. A standard user cannot invoke ROOT.
