19 REASONS THIS “SURVIVAL” STORY SMELLS FISHY
DangerOnion ^ | October 31, 2017 | DangerOnion

They set off from Hawaii in May of this year, bound for Tahiti. They were caught in a storm that both ruined their engine and rendered their mast and sails useless. They were unable to contact help. They drifted for five months, living off of dry food and a handheld watermaker (takes the salt out of seawater so you can drink it) until they were rescued by a fishing boat and, eventually, the Navy.

Now here’s how much of their story makes sense:

They left Hawaii in May. They were rescued five months later by the Navy.

That’s it. That’s the only portion of their story that has even a shred of credibility to it. Now, I’m not going to speculate as to their motives yet, but I will point out that the world of open-water sailing is an obscure one to most people. I am one of a small minority to have spent a lot of time sailing on the open ocean, out of sight of land for months at a time. So I don’t blame journalists for not catching these things at first sight. But that’s why I’m here to explain them to you.

It’s a bit of a long read,
but is well written and educational.

The same blogger's article about the phony idea of solar roadways is pretty good.

And, per the article, the only food
they said they ate would have left them dead
long before five months.

A broken mast looks like this

Here is a photo of a single-hander (one person) who even after being dis-masted, jury rigged a sail and made it to his destination port. Alone.

I don't want to know the story of these two....whatever.

Long read but laced with humor thanks to the author’s attitude. I definitely agree that the original story is so full of holes it doesn’t float.

Their intent was to be offered a movie deal for the “story”.

Wasn’t one of them a past reality show contestant?

>>Their intent was to be offered a movie deal for the “story”.<<

But they were too stupid to realize how stupid their fake story was.

He reminds me of the guy who wrote The Martian, which was turned into a recent movie. He is meticulous, granular, and entertaining.

They probably thought they would find fame, a book deal and maybe even a movie!

So only one of them knew the slightest bit of anything about sailing, boats, and oceans... just enough to be dangerous. The other knew less than nothing and had never been on a sailboat.

They are both lunatics as well as liars. Whatever they really did, they are nuts.

Appel has been living on the boat for two years.

You don't have to sail. The boat has engines.

Which one is the "man" and which one is the "woman" ?

The blond looks pretty masculine, but the darker one isn't exactly a "femme". Carpet munchers, no doubt.
