NFL Protestors Don't Understand WHY the Anthem is Performed

NFL kneelers have started a firestorm regarding our National Anthem and article after article have discussed what the National Anthem means. Although perhaps well intentioned, all of these discussions miss the main issue.

The issue is not what the National Anthem might mean to this or that individual but rather why the National Anthem, or in smaller settings the Pledge of Allegiance, is performed before public gatherings. And that why is unity.

Before the city council meeting or before a town hall or even yes, before a sporting event the National Anthem is performed as a sign of unity. Before we start debating this or that point, before we perhaps engage in heated debate, and yes before we go out on the field and try to beat the tar out of the other guy we pause for and acknowledge our collective unity.

The fighting can start after that but first comes a communal declaration that we are all one; unified as Americans.

A national anthem can be a national anthem or an opportunity for self-expression, but not both. And, if this is yet one more thing that Americans can no longer agree on, if a people lack the minimal social glue to rise reflexively when the band strikes up the first bars of "O-oh, say, can you...", you have to wonder whether anything remains to bind us together at all.

In my opinion, for the title you need to be more precise in your language. By NFL protesters, do you mean the NFL players protesting by taking a knee? Or do you mean the fans who are boycotting the NFL games because the players are taking a knee during the national anthem.

If they stop playing the National Anthem I can see fans singing it! This has happened recently at a college I can’t recall the name. The powers to be said the audio wasn’t working but the fans started singing the National Anthem anyway!

The stopping of the National Anthem has been the intent of the loony left for years.

We have boycotted the NFL for years. Sick of too many thugs on their roster who get special treatment!

College football players are not always the most intellectually gifted students on campus and they are scholarship and not paying tuition so many gravitate to the easy classes.

The Black Studies and other politically correct , social justice courses are easy A classes where all you need to do is agree with the teacher's lunatic rantings to get a good grade.

In fact, these identity politics and PC studies are tailored to providing a warm, welcoming community for the last few generations sub par affirmative action admits who can't pass the more rigorous and racist white privilege classes like chemistry, physics, logic, math , engineering , etc

So we have 20 years of NFL players who gravitated to identity politics classes in college to get an easy pass and they have been indoctrinated in the racial hate and radicalized by the cultural Marxism that is afflicting our school systems
