CNBC reports Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh is spinning out graduates earning $200,000 to work in the rapidly growing field of self-driving cars.
Pittsburgh has become America's unofficial self-driving car research capital. At least four companies in the autonomous vehicle business, including Uber, have set up offices in the city; they've been testing its self-driving cars on Pittsburgh's streets since 2016.
Andrew Moore, the dean of Carnegie Mellon's computer science school, said that graduates of its computer vision program are getting job offers from these firms with pay packages of upwards of $200,000 right out of school. It's a situation that's "unheard of for any role until recently," Moore said.
"It does feel very much like a gold rush town at the moment," he added.....

I got paid “$200,000 right out of the box” in networking too.
I hope these kids do it, and BANK THAT F*CKIN CASH
A lot of fields are like that, esp in aviation. feast or famine...
I made over 300 selling pay phones of all things. Remember them?
And destined to fall on its face, like every other gold rush in history.
What are reasons for self-driving cars falling on their face? Not saying you’re wrong, but that is a very strong statement to make. Some reasons would be good
Amazon was a gold rush Company with stock selling for a few dollars 20 years ago. Now it’s a gold rush Company with thousand-dollar stock price. I was never good at seeing the big picture and the future. That’s why I am a poor man LOL
Escort Service Studies?
Litigation from victims of accidents would be one issue for sure.
Hacking would be another issue.
Don’t get me wrong—I would love my car to drive me around town when I am in my nineties.
I just don’t want to get run over by one of these things before I get to that point!
The very best thing about riding in a car is driving the thing.
The only thing worse than riding while my wife drives is riding while a computer drives. Hello Siri... turn right on elm street.... I'm sorry Kjam.... I don't understand "turn right".
That must have been AWESOME
I bet you could smell the Drakkar Noir from a mile away (from you)
What kind of stereo and body kit did you put on your car ? :D
This market will eventually hit the wall...
I think the whole pipe dream will die once somebody mis-codes or hacks some car software and some people get self-driven to their deaths.
If they are hiring recent graduate to program these things I will not be driving one any time soon
How long before these Gold Rush graduates are proudly training their H1-B replacements?
I bought a brand-new 1986 Ford Mustang GT for cash and I wear Old Spice.
Besides, I like to drive, especially in a nice tight sporty car.
I drive over 50,000 miles a year and probably ride 500. Maybe...on a good year.
I get carsick if I try to read while not driving, so I’d be nothing but bored, and probably as scared as the time I asked a co-worker for a ride. He was a Chinese national from New York City trying to drive in Detroit. Use your imagination about how bad it was. You won’t come close.
When I got back to the office, I was shaking noticeably. A colleague asked if I was OK. I replied that I’d been nervous riding with people, scared even, never before terrified.
Philosophy major is now profitable!
I just dont want to get run over by one of these things before I get to that point!
...
I guess you’d rather get run over by a car driven by a person.
I think the whole pipe dream will die once somebody mis-codes or hacks some car software and some people get self-driven to their deaths.
...
That would make sense if car driving wasn’t already the deadliest activity most of us engage in.
