Ken Burns’ reputation is that of a PBS documentary creator, but as his works show, he is actually a significant cog in the left-wing propaganda machine. His partisan agenda is only matched by his carelessness with the facts.

When I saw that it was on PBS...red flags went up for me. I did watch some of it...love to see war footage.

I liked Burns’ documentary on Prohibition. But I had enough of Viet Nam while it was happening —our nightly war on tv. So, no need to watch.

“...raped a woman...”

What unit were you in? In my division you would have been court martialed.

I was personnel clerk in an artillery unit. I wrote up all the Article 15s. We didn’t do court martials. Most of the time I was in Pleiku, central highlands. My guns were almost always doing H&I on the “Ho Chi Minh trail”. I spent most of my day talking to other personnel clerks, finance clerks, supply clerks, and to the guys from both my unit and other units who were coming and going.

There were several of us devout Christians who objected to the immoral behavior of our comrades. A major who far outranked my CO made the statement that “boys will be boys” and that “if we gave Article 15s for every drunk a.h. there’d be nobody left.” which was an exaggeration, but made his point.

I was in a bastard unit. Due to what my unit had and where it went, my CO reported to nobody ... for cyo reasons of the upper ranks. Since he reported to nobody, he could have had me type up more 15s. The 15s he did ask me to type up were for things he considered more serious.

Guys would get drunk and lose their rifle in the village. That was an Article 15, regardless of whether the drunk raped anyone or not. (Most of the time a sober guy was sent in to retrieve the rifle and the villagers cooperated totally with us, as they always did in the Central Highlands in 66-67 when I was there. All those Evangelical C&MA and Regions Beyond villages were solid anti-communist with virtually all village men age 17-40 in the military fighting the commies.

Back home in 66-67 Playboy was pushing the limits of what was permissible. Birth Control pills were new and becoming very popular. Guys would get letters from a family member or friend saying “your girlfriend is now living with a new boyfriend.” Guys in Vietnam at the peak of testosterone and hormones felt like they were missing out. They would get drunk and do stupid things.

From a short term perspective, alcohol was the #1 problem when I was there. Rape was almost always from a guy who had some to drink.

The #1 killer of our guys in 66-67 was alcohol. Drunk driving with major and minor crashes was extremely high. In the Pleiku pool room near me one drunk got in a fight with his drunk best friend and skewered his abdomen with a pool cue. His best friend died a couple days later. The letter went to his loved ones back home: “Your son (family member) died a hero fighting for his country.” We personnel clerks could never write a letter telling the truth.

Amen, Redcatchers didn't go for any of that in any form. Would have been foxhole justice meted out, not court martial.

Saw Burns on FBN this am. The doo is very distracting. I went around the corner so I could just listen. Typical Burns lib slant. Won’t be watching the series.

It was a young Army Captain who came up with the idea of dividing the country in half. His name was Dean Rusk.
