The Guardian is running a sob article about an unfortunate woman who is homeless despite working ridiculously long hours for a poor hourly wage. The subject of the article describes it as economic slavery and says she feels like a peasant. But based on the figures supplied in the article, it appears Fran earns over $50,000 a year. This article is about nothing more than pushing the $15 per hour Minimum wage; it is using heart strings rather than economics to push an idea And this is all they have.
Fran works one job at a Popeyes fast-food restaurant and takes home $76 a day (six days a week), and until she recently quit her second job was doing janitorial work getting $93.5 a day. This works out (not including taxes or deductions) at $52,884 dollars a year. Yet Fran is homeless and cant afford car insurance.

Sounds like Fran doesn’t give a damn about her kids...and might just have a drug problem.
The Guardian Pitches that Fifty Thousand a Year is Economic Slavery
I don’t see INCOME as the central feature of modern economics.
It’s DEBT. The modern world relies far too much on debt. Your credit cards? Your college education? Your car? Your house? Union pension fund in the red? State deficit? Federal deficit? Third World countries in hock to the IMF?
We are all slaves. All wage slaves. The only exceptions are the people who have worked hard and own real assets which generate income. But even they (through no fault of their own) lives in world in which most everything runs on the panicked labor of millions and millions of wage slaves struggling (and failing) to get out of debt.
If we built an economic system that relied less on debt, we’d all be less like slaves. I think it starts with reforming the federal government, paying less in taxes, and freeing the marketplace to function efficiently.
What’s 50k after all the punitive taxes?
35K?
May folks were making that kind of money decades ago.
If you make $50,000 and are homeless it’s because: 1. There’s an immigrant living in a house or apartment that you might otherwise have had; or (2) the government declares too many areas to be off-limits for construction and development, so there is a housing shortage. Or (3) maybe she has a drug or alcohol or gambling or spending problem that sucks up all her cash.
It’s really important for people to read through the insane comments after the article to see just how hateful and out-of-touch British and American commies are...
She had an entry position in fast food for 22 years! Something is not adding up here.
