Lidl to establish regional distribution center in Georgia, create 250 jobs

German grocer Lidl said Monday that it will establish a $100 million regional headquarter and distribution center in Cartersville, GA, creating 250 jobs over the next five years. It's the company's fourth such center in the U.S. The news comes as Lidl announced four new store openings on July 13. Two stores will be located in Virginia, and the other two in North Carolina. Lidl opened its first 10 stores on June 15 across Virginia and the Carolinas. The SPDR S&P Retail ETF XRT, +1.82% is down nearly 9% for the year so far while the S&P 500 index SPX, +0.03% is up 9.1% for the period....

Walmart got their heads handed to them when they tried to compete in Germany. I wonder if Aldi and Lidl would have targeted the US as aggressively but for that fiasco. (Trader Joe’s was established but went on an expansion spree after that, as well). If Rewe and Real show up, it will be a real shoot-out. (Of course Kaiser lost its shirt with A&P.)

Lidl just opened 10 stores in E. North Carolina.
We occasionally shop Aldi’s and I’m curious whether the two are similar or what separates them.
The closest Lidl to me is 25-30 miles away or I’d check it out for myself.
