'Russian aggression in the Caribbean sparks fears of new Cold War.' Sorry, no it doesn't.....

....but I suspect you'd be inclined to believe it if you read the following.....

'Russia last week deployed strategic nuclear bombers in the Caribbean, while Russian naval infantry simulated an air assault nearby.

Russian heavy artillery also took part in a major live firing exercise in the Kaliningrad enclave, a few miles from Polish and Lithuanian NATO territory. This is typical of Russia's aggressive posture in the new Cold War.'

Actually, I made all that up. Here is what actually happened, as reported in yesterday's (June 18 2017) Sunday Times: 'Russia's western enclave of Kaliningrad was surrounded on three sides by Nato forces yesterday at the start of an unprecedented set of summer war games.

'Operation Sabre Strike 2017 includes the first full deployment of America's strategic bombers and a simulated air assault by the Royal Marines in the Baltics

'The "historic" deployment of all three types of US strategic nuclear bomber--B-52, B-1 and the B-2 stealth aircraft--is to show American commitment to "ready and posture forces focused on deterring conflict", said Lieutenant-General Richard Clark, a US airforce commander.'

The report correctly points out that Kaliningrad, once the German city of Koenigsberg, is the base for Russia's Baltic Fleet and houses Iskander missiles with a range of 300 miles and nuclear capability. But the Russian presence in Kaliningrad is long-established, and is the consequence of the war started by Hitler's Germany in 1941 and won by Stalin's USSR in 1945. Kaliningrad became an enclave only after the secession of the Baltic states from the USSR in 1991, a secession which post-Communist Russia has never done anything to prevent or reverse, despite the foolish mistreatment of Russian minorities in the Baltics, and their aggressive decision to join the anti-Russian NATO military alliance in 2004, after 13 years of unhindered independence.......

While we have to be careful, but Russia is no longer an enemy.

Muslim terrorists are the enemy and we need to fight those together and Russia is willing.

Hitchens has always been an apologist for the Communists, of almost every stripe.

Russia did NOT win WW2 all by itself. If it weren’t for American planes, trains/box cars (8,000 of them), and other equipment, the Red Army would have been more crippled than they were (after Stalin’s purges of the late 30’s and German victories all over Europe/Russia until Stalingrad and Leningrad).

Hitchens loves to forget, on purpose, Soviet aggression against Poland (Ribbentropp-Molotov secret Treaty and Protocols), the killing of anti-communist Poles, Czechs (Masaryk wasn’t learning to fly out his window), Hungary (the illegal seizure of old established German families there, keeping Eastern Germany and E. Berlin, the Baltic (independent states), etc.

No Western European state (except Nazi Germany) ever posed any military threat against the Soviet Union/Russia, not even Ukraine. The seizure of Crimea, Georgia, Ossettia etc, and the eastern part of Ukraine by Russian forces (under Col. Grilka etc) was pure aggression.

Don’t forget the Soviet supplying of the No. Korean Army and their directing of the invasion of So. Korean which led to millions of people being killed or enslaved (See Monat Pavel, LIFE magazine, late 50’s on the hidden role of the USSR in that invasion).

Pat Hitchens reminds me of the Cockburn Politboro of writers, a bunch of lying red bastards who wouldn’t know the truth if it bit them in the balls. I took on one of them on radio many moons ago (I think it was Andrew), and literally destroyed him because all he could do was call people names and spew demonstrable lies.

Communism/Marxism is truly man’s most dangerous form of insanity because it destroys the human mind and replaces it with an ISIS, Khmer Rouge, North Korean, Stalin/Beria mindset of human destruction and blind obedience to lies.

I liked Chris Hitchens. Only met him once but he was one of the more honest of the “Left” writers and thinkers, though I strongly disagreed with him on many issues.

At least Chris Hitchens was a more honest leftist who recognized communist aggression when he saw it (Hungary 56, Czechoslovakia 68) Gadansk shipyards, Poland and even Indochina to some degree.

Junior ain’t so smart or so hot!

There’s still many people out there who will call you a “Putinista” if you simply point out that the agenda of progressive- left, globalist propaganda and fear-mongering against Russia is a political ploy, and extremely dangerous as well

Every reference you make is about the soviets. You do realize the Soviet Union and its ideology collapsed and ceased to exist 27 years ago, don’t you?

Yes I know about the “collapse” of the Soviet Union. Friends of mine were responsible for a large part of it.

However the Hitchens and the Cockburns (or most of them) were toadies for the Soviets and the new “Russians”.

There are a lot of Sovietologists (esp. the older ones) who have some doubts about the “ideology collapse” of the SU/Russia.

Old Russian saying: “You can take someone out of the KGB but you can’t take the KGB out of them”. Putin, esp.

If you know the history of the creation of the Soviet secret police, many of them came from the ranks of the Czarist police. They just got a new paymaster (and Derzhinsky and Beria).

Some friends and acquaintances spend their Soviet holidays in Lubyanka Prison, Potma, Archangel/Murmansk camps/mines, Vorkuta, Lake Baikal, and the Trans-Siberian Railroad Slave labor camps tour.

Others enjoyed the scenic cells of No. Korea, the tiger cages of SVietnam/Ho Chi Minh Trail and the luxurious accomodations of the 5 Red Star Hanoi Hilton, complete with Cuban masseuses (i.e. torturers). One had his own prison stripes from Romania, beaten into his chest and back.

It ain’t over till the Fat Lady sings and she’s still on the Red Stage from Moscow to Syria, Iran, Cuba and Western/Eastern Europe.

I spent too many years in Berlin back during the Cold War. I agree with you completely.

Of course the globalist elites have targeted Russia because, like President Trump, Putin is a NATIONALIST, GHW Bush’s ( and Satan’s) New World Order cannot come to pass with a strong, independent Russia in place.

Not to be picky, but you did not mention the Winter War. Stalin got half of Poland with hardly any resistance and thought Finland would be an easy plum. The Finns, however, had thrown of the Communist yoke earlier and wanted no part of that. Their defense was doing much better than one would think possible, but ran out of ammunition.

In 1961, I visited Austria. At a border gate—perhaps with Czechoslovakia—a Russian tank was parked with its cannon facing into the gate.

Hitchens should have stood there with me!

You still talk only about the past. Russia is not what it was, and sadly, neither is the United States
