In addition to visits from the president and first lady, U.S. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson, has had his local parish priest praying by his bedside.
Fr. Timothy Hedrick, parochial vicar at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Metairie, was in Washington taking a summer course at Catholic University when Scalise was shot by a lone gunman Wednesday during a baseball practice with other Republican congressmen.
When news broke of the mass shooting, Hedrick rushed to MedStar Washington Hospital Center in northeast Washington to attend to Scalise and pray with his wife, Jennifer. Hedrick has also served as a conduit between the family and the church community, posting updates on the church's Facebook page about the congressman's condition and asking for prayers.
A prayer service was held at St. Catherine for the Scalise family Wednesday night.
"Jennifer is in Washington DC with Steve. Steve is still in critical condition, but he is resting," Hedrick wrote on Facebook. "President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump visited with Jennifer and offered their prayers and support to her and their children. Jennifer is very appreciative of all of the prayers and support especially from the St. Catherine of Siena community. Please continue to pray for Steve's recovery, the recovery of Steve's detail and the others injured, and for the medical team caring for them."
Scalise remains in critical condition after undergoing a second procedure to stop the bleeding from an injury Wednesday night. According to hospital officials, Scalise was shot in the left hip and the bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bone and injuring internal organs.
“...has had his local parish priest praying by his bedside.”
IMO, not a good sign. Hopefully not ‘Last Rites’.
He has come through a third bout of surgery since then.
It would seem that while Scalise is not out of the woods just yet but making it so far is a good sign.
“...Hopefully not Last Rites...”
The sacrament of Anointing of the Sick would be fine for him; this sacrament brings healing and does not necessarily indicate a dire situation as it used to.
I will be praying for healing for Senator Scalise at the noon Latin Mass today.
“Jesus I trust in you.”
Please heal Steve Scalise and protect his family.
Please heal our nation.
The Bible tells us to pray continually. It should not be cause for alarm to read that someone is praying for a sick person, even if it is a priest or pastor.
Fr. Hedrick happened to be in town when this tragedy occurred, and now he can be there to minister to Steve and his family - I'd call that God's providential care!
The Anointing of the Sick is for everyone. Not necessarily for those on the deathbeds.
I’ve received it several times when I was going into surgery.
Ping!
Catholic prayer ping!

Thank you both for the ping.

Lord Jesus Christ,
Hear our prayer and heal Thy servant Steve from his wound, restore him to good health and comfort his family, friends, and constituents.
Heal and forgive our nation, o Lord.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost amen.
Thanks for the ping. Praying for Steve and his family and doctors.
When I was a kid I had to have knee surgery due to a sports injury. The night before the priest came in to administer sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick - I knew it as Extreme Unction - and I was terrified there was something they weren’t telling me, no matter how much the priest tried to convince me it was the SOP for all Catholics in the hospital, no matter what they were there for.
