To Carry a Gun

Stay free, stay strong, do your part for the civil defense, and we will have an ever increasing, responsibly armed citizenry against the forces of evil, and maintain our unique country, free in a world of oppression

One of the great freedoms I can now exercise since leaving California is the right to own and carry firearms (keep and bear arms), which the Constitution guarantees the government will not even touch (infringe). Of course they do, especially in California and other liberal states. But in Florida, you can apply for a concealed carry weapons (CCW) permit, and if you meet the standard eligibility and criteria, take a class, pass a background check, and demonstrate a working knowledge of handguns including a practice shoot, you get a CCW. That was the easy part. What no one tells you, is that actually carrying a gun in practice is very different from the theoretical discussions we all have with ourselves and others before actually carrying a gun. And it has some amusing aspects.

Only one problem as I see it. Again, “allowing” the govt to dictate a right. WTH?

Always; received the okay from the FAA to carry on the flight deck and I have a WA CPL.

The article author, Ms. Judi, only mentioned revolvers, as big and bulky.

Yes, most ‘concealable’ revolvers are, by design, 5 or 6 shot models in larger than .22 Magnum. At a ‘snubby forum’ in Florida in 2005, a retired ‘ghost’ told the story of the choice of ‘concealable firearms’ the C.I.A. had to make. The two contenders were, the Browning Hi-power - a nice, well-known semi-automatic pistol, not too much smaller than a 1911 pistol; or the Smith and Wesson J-frame revolver. The agency chose the J-frame. The decision was that, ‘all the things that are wrong with the J-frame, were the things that made it right. Lastly, there was NO question when the trigger was pulled.’

By it’s design, it is a task to ‘pocket’ a semi-automatic with a sufficient confidence of negligent discharges.

Whereas, the J-frame WAS designed to be pocketed, in either the ‘x42’ or ‘x48’ series.

IF the inglorious C.I.A. chose the J-frame, when even Browning had been manufacturing the ‘BDM’, a .380 calibre ‘Baby Hi-Power’, also a pocketable pistol, it stands a weighted decision worthy of consideration for today’s concealable firearm carrier.

Make sure all your other licenses and permits to exercise the Bill of Rights are up to date.

It’s indeed a tremendous responsibility to ensure one’s own safety and not rely on the government as a first responder. Not everyone is up to the task. I have no qualms with those who abdicate that responsibility. My beef is with those who would deny me mine.

Methinks Sean_Anthony is a bot. All its/his/her posts look alike.

Uniformity is suspicious.

But in Florida, you can apply for a concealed carry weapons (CCW) permit...

Which is a clear infringement, violating our God-given rights as recognized in the second amendment.

Ah, no,I’m not “pocketing” a pistol or revolver period. I don’t know why so many here seem enamored with carrying a gun in their pants’ pocket.

Dear crossdaddy,

re: “Ah, no,I’m not “pocketing” a pistol or revolver period. I don’t know why so many here seem enamored with carrying a gun in their pants’ pocket.”

‘Pocket pistols’ have been around a LONG time. Mind you, President Lincoln was shot with a pocket pistol of its time. Colt made a ‘Sheriff’s Model’ of a percussion revolver which was carried as a ‘vest pistol’, since vests were a standard item of wear in the city. (BTW, the term ‘pistolero’ was coined BEFORE a semi-auto was devised.)

Over The Waistband or Inside The WaistBand can still provide the carrier with an ‘oops’ moment, as when picking an item off the bottom shelf in the store.

Square Of Back, as TV’s Mannix wore, puts the base of your spine in a very precarious place. You get knocked on your butt, and that lump of steel, is right there. You might get away with that, once, maybe.

Ankle holsters are good for carrying firearm #2, or for those who drive a lot as their job.

Shoulder holsters provide a lot of options unto itself, but most made today, that I have seen offered, have the pistol pointed to the rear, instead of down, as James Bond of old wore. (Remember, ‘don’t point the muzzle ...’?)

Then, there is me. I can’t wear a heavy belt, or tighten up a ‘511 style’ belt, because of the precise alignment of where a normal belt goes about, and where my colostomy site is located. IWB’s, OWB’s, and shoulder holsters are all depended upon belt placement. My doctor advised me not to wear anything that wraps tight on my ankles, in regards to the medical care my legs are receiving at present. So, for me, a nice pair of ‘Dockers-style’ slacks with pleats, and a nice set of suspenders, offers me a comfortable method of pocket carry of a Double Action Only snubby revolver in a Mika-made holster.

Those that carry semi-auto’s have to hide something else that is bulky, the other magazine. The revolver world does have its own little bulkiness issue, the round speedloader. Some of us use a speed strip, which lies flat. (Two can be carried in an altoid tin, but no so much on the quick reload.) I would suggest that if someone wished, they view the YouTube videos of Michael DeBethencourt.
