Kroger to invest $70M in Northern Ky. distribution center; will employ 90

The Kroger Co. has identified a facility suitable for a logistics and distribution location in Boone County and will invest $70 million in it, according to a request for a reduction in state ad valorem tax rate to the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority.

Kroger will be buying a newly created building, which will be one of the first significant capital investments for the company in the Northern Kentucky community beyond a retail project. This will allow Kroger to distribute thousands of items to over 1,000 stores regionally as well as create opportunities for additional investment and job creation in future years.

The project is expected to create 90 full-time jobs at an average annual salary of $38,000.

The KEDFA staff recommends approval of the requested percentage reduction in the state ad valorem tax rate on the industrial building and equipment proposed to be financed through the issuance of the industrial revenue bonds.

Lowe’s Food is going to fit out a shopping center in the burbs outside Columbia.

It was announced a few days ago.

A lot of the area residents are excited.

Be nice if they’d put an awning at the entrance to our store. They’ve done 2 major renovations in the last 10 years and don’t seem to give a damn about the mess in front of the entrance. I called the home office and asked why they haven’t done something. The woman was cold and acted like I should mind my own damn business.

If Publix were ever to move into central Kentucky they would eat Kroger’s lunch. Sadly, not going to happen.

Pick one or two out and send the photos to them. Maybe they’ll respond.

The $70 million includes the land, the building, equipment, permits, planning, administration and probably initial stock, it’s not just for labor.

Some bureaucrats have brainwashed themselves into believing all the company mottoes about ‘we care about our customer family!’ and they don’t like that fantasy being contradicted by the ‘little people’. You popped her bubble!
\
For all we know, some of the bosses she protects do want to know how their customers feel, especially during a long period of construction. Some customers are inconvenienced and go to a competitor, never bothering to return.

90 full-time jobs at an average annual salary of $38,000.

After taxes that's what? 26k per year?

And folks still wonder why those who are working can't afford zip...Amazing.

I live in Boone County. Low taxes, Boone Cty Sheriff’s are 2nd Amendment/CCW friendly, affordable housing and good work ethics. This area has become a warehousing center mecca. Control of Ky has taken some time, but we’ve finally wrestled control of the state from the Dems. Gov Matt Bevin is making long needed changes. KY was a hybrid RTW state, IOW Right To Work could be decided at County level. But I think the entire state is RTW now.
I’m not a shill for Boone Cty, but took a relo here in 2002, retired here in 2013 and love the area.

True. 38K is well below the median income. These are low wage jobs, even in an area with lower COL.

With exception of mangers most are entry level jobs. Not meant to be life LONG term ones. You don’t need a college education for these jobs, just GED or HS.

Managers can move up the corporate ladder as they prove their ability to succeed. The entry level should improve their education and skills and move up or move on.

This is Kroger’s attempt to do the online order filling that Amazon has expanded to for groceries. Down side is neither can supply FRESH or PERISHABLE foods. You still have to make a trip to the store to do that. I can call in an order to Kroger’s and just pick it up now. BUT I DON’T want some 19 yr old picking my fresh produce or meat they lack experience of cooking/shopping by 50+ yrs over me doing it. I want to be the person choosing those items as I do look very closely at them and smell them for freshness. Plus I read labels for caloric, Fat, Cholesterol, and Sodium content. They would NOT.

Might be good for those who are considered ‘shut in’s’ but you really need to pick out your own groceries. Plus I Coupon to expand our food money. Have done that since I was in my 20’s and now in my late 6th decade. I’m real picky about fresh stuff.

A person boxing or bagging groceries is not worth more than $8 an hr. Nor is a cashier. They are PT or entry level jobs. Like delivering Pizza is.
