NY lawmakers push bill requiring child-proof triggers on guns

A group of Democrats in the state senate are backing a measure that would prohibit the sale of guns in New York State without child-proof features.

The bill, S.3444, would make it illegal to sell or transfer handguns one year after its passage unless the firearm was designed to where a five-year-old could not pull the trigger. Supporters think the move is needed to prevent accidental shootings.

“There is no reason that a young child five years old should be able to have access to a weapon that he or she could fire,” said the bill’s sponsor, Sen. José M. Serrano, at a press conference earlier this month. “So we need to make sure that all weapons sold in the state of New York are not fireable by children this young.”

Serrano’s legislation would require that all new handguns sold in the state be childproofed. Suggestions in the bill’s language on how to accomplish the mandate include adjusting the trigger pull to at least a 10-pound draw, changing the mechanism to where a child’s hands are too small to operate the handgun, or requiring a series of multiple motions to fire the pistol or revolver.

The people of NY better hope and pray gang bangers don’t get hold of guns with triggers like this. At least now, they mostly shoot each other. You give them trigger this stiff and they will have a very hard time hitting each other. Bullets will go EVERYWHERE just like with NYPD.

It is curious how they arrive at the 5-years-old age requirement. Why not 7-years old or 8-years old? Why not mandate an ax-requirement that no one under the age of five should handle axes. Perhaps a requirement that all steak knives in the house should be locked up and out-of-sight of five-year-old kids as well?

Then don't leave guns around where five year olds can find them, José.

The safest way to keep a firearm safe from children would be to require a biometric device on the handle or stock that recognizes the registered owners finger and/or palm prints.

If the wrong person touches it, then the local police station can remotely disable the firearm until the registered owner goes through a very comprehensive re-education class.

Second offenses means total loss of 2A rights, fines and imprisonment. /s/
