I’m sure many wonder how the hell a person under IG investigation can be put in charge of or even considered as director of the FBI.
You should read the NY Times account of the firing of William Sessions by Clinton. No mention of Watergate at all in that story. Just listed the reasons that Clinton had to do it. And at the recommendation of the Attny General.
That situation is more similar to this one than Watergate is to this one.

both pieces are full of smears of Sessions, mostly for trivial matters, and WaPo has Chuck Schumer fully endorsing the unprecedented firing.

I don’t believe any Deputy Director has remained in the agency after a new Director took over.
