Close to the truth... posses used to be a common practice. Now no sheriff would dare do it because of the liability issues (it’s our fault for letting the law go there).

Didn’t need posses, everyone on our block was armed, the guy two doors down was WWII Euro theater vet, guy behind was some sort of merc (Army vet) doing central America work, you get the drift, etc.
The draft had a way of doing that: they all had something (carbine or revolver) and no fear of using it.
