I read a book while driving on a road trip once. I kept the book on the steering wheel. It kept me awake! :-)

Entered Kansas, watching Interstate billboards passing by announcing, "See the five-legged cow".

After a few hours of driving across Kansas, I was ready to view that cow!

I learned how to read and drive many years ago when I was driving thousands of miles a month, mostly in Nevada. You just glance up from the book every few seconds, and then read another bit, and so on. You can follow the book, even get right into it, but never did I fail to keep the glancing-at-the-road routine going at the same time, and I never drifted out of my lane. It just doesn’t take your full-time attention to stay on a straight and empty road, and it’s too easy to fall asleep without something to occupy your mind.

This worked well on rural Interstates and some two-lane highways in the West. Of course, whenever another vehicle was in the vicinity, I’d stop reading until I had the road to myself again.

Excuse me...she’s in Australia but it’s the same as the UK in that they drive on the left side of the road and their steering wheels are on the opposite side as those in the US.

I travel regularly to/from New York on Megabus. To those who've never seen them on the nation's interstates they're big blue buses with silly pictures on them.I ride it because they offer really cheap fares. When I ride them I always sit up top at a window (they're double deckers).

While riding I like to look down at the cars passing by and I routinely see people texting at 60MPH...on I-90...I-84...I-684,etc.

Amazing!

I’ve seen a woman driving with her knees while texting. They can’t help it.

I’ve seen people reading books, newspapers, eating meals and getting a BJ.

During the idiotic Carter years I read half the western canon on the road.

Fifty-five on the interstate in North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming was like walking up the down escalator.

I drove VW vans for much of the 55-mph years, and they generally cruised about 55 anyway (slower up hills). That flat steering wheel was just right for resting a book.

There were times, though, starting into a 30-mile straightaway, when I was tempted to lash the wheel, put a cinder block on the gas pedal, and climb in back for a nap.

One time I had to drive from outside Portland back to North Dakota.

Made it three-quarters of the way, to southwest Montana, by late afternoon.

Had a quick beer in my favorite bar on earth, went and napped for an hour in the park, then headed east again.

That night I read Rogue Male by the overhead light, alternately smoking big Thompson cigars a friend had given me or swilling coffee and chewing Copenhagen (which he had also got me started on).

The peril, of course, was deer wandering across the blacktop, but I was nineteen or twenty and I had places to be.

I never dared to read while driving at night. Audiobooks are better than nothing then. Read Rogue Male many years ago — excellent book, though the sequel (can’t remember the title) wasn’t nearly as good.

Maybe her car is one of those whizz-bang new ones with lane departure warning, blindspot warning and automatic emergency braking. Almost invites inattention!
