Goldman Sachs is bullish on space mining with "asteroid-grabbing spacecraft." In a 98-page note for clients seen by Business Insider, analyst Noah Poponak and his team argue that platinum mining in space is getting cheaper and easier, and the rewards are becoming greater as time goes by.
"While the psychological barrier to mining asteroids is high, the actual financial and technological barriers are far lower. Prospecting probes can likely be built for tens of millions of dollars each and Caltech has suggested an asteroid-grabbing spacecraft could cost $2.6bn," the report says.
$2.6 billion (£2 billion) sounds like a lot, but it is only about one-third the amount that has been invested in Uber, putting the price well within reach of today's VC funds. It is also a comparable to the setup cost for a regular earthbound mine. (This MIT paper estimates a new rare earth metal mine can cost up to $1 billion, from scratch.)
The price of spacecraft is plummeting, thanks to reusable rockets from Elon Musk's SpaceX and Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin....

GO AWAY! You guys have ruined the economy enough!
Sounds great.
The moon is rich as well, I’ve heard.
Wells Fargo should top that list.
We should first send a big shipfull of investment bankers to mine asteroids to see if it is profitable.
I don’t believe Wells Fargo is considered “bulge bracket.” See: http://www.streetofwalls.com/articles/investment-banking/learn-the-basics/bulge-bracket-investment-banks/ https://www.wallstreetprep.com/knowledge/investment-banks-list/top-global-bulge-bracket-investment-banks/
I only posted American run BB banks. (I used to work on Wall Street so I have a special hate of those banks, tho more people that try to get into that racket, the better for me in my current field, tech, bc of less competition. I just want I-Banks to be small enough to not be TBTF )
“getting cheaper and easier”
As compared to what?
A MILLION FAKE ACCOUNTS!!!
I still get surveys (i do them for a few extra bucks) about whether I again trust Wells. I say no.
They list all the things they’ve done since then and I still don’t trust them.
Get surveys from Target and Budweiser and Fiat and basically any company that ####ed up in their advertising by alienating half of America.
And still some from Chipotle after the illness their food caused some years back ;)

Paying for health care?
Once we ship stuff from asteroids, we can deport the elite back to them....
I wonder if that will be a Union mining job and what the hourly pay might be for mining in zero G zero air space.
The first ones to do it will be pioneers for sure. I wonder if they can find some really big asteroids then after hollowing them out they can turn them into space prisons for bad politicians.
It really is one of the best sci-fi series in a while; particularly since they have CGI available at a much more affordable rate than previously.
I hope this is a trend. Looking forward to the new Star Trek series whenever it starts. The character ‘Sasha’ from The Walking Dead just died (on the show) and went to work on the new series.
I wish the companies you reference would not only go extinct, but the executives punished for their crimes, up to and including the death penalty.
