Is Appendix carry safer than a Side carry?
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 3/13/2017 | J Hines

Posted on 03/13/2017 8:34:05 AM PDT by w1n1

There are groups of gun enthusiasts that love to appendix carry while another group of shooters thinks its a safety hazard. This group thinks an accidental discharge can occur while you’re drawing the pistol as the line of sight is toward the pelvic area.

Rob Leatham and Rob Pincus goes over some advantages that appendix carry offers such as concealment, speed, and presentation of the weapon.

Rob Pincus explains one advantage that appendix carry shine is keeping your weapon in front while drawing and displaying. Where as the side holstered there is more required motion with your arms to get the handgun un-holstered and on target. With appendix carry positioned its very easy to go to your weapon and puts your body in a ready to fight posture.

With the right technique mastered even a pudgy person can use the appendix carry effectively. See the footage here. How about you, where do you carry>?

I just don’t like having bullets pointed at the family jewels... side carry.

Not to mention that my job requires lots of sitting.

Shoulder holster, FTW.

I appendix carry. A good holster (raven concealment for me) and regular trigger discipline and you’re all set. It’s only really a safety hazard if one or both of these isn’t so

Carry is up to everyone. I find issue with just about every carry option out there - and now that I’m getting fat it’s just getting worse.

Most people aren’t experiencing good carry because they have the wrong belt. 98% of people simply use junk belts.

Maryland carry: Handguns can only be transported on a direct route from home to range and back or from home to gunsmith/gunshop and back. In other words, I’m supposed to be unarmed so I don’t injure a reliable democrat voter by defending myself.

Rule #2: Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.

Appendix carry causes the muzzle to inherently cover things which I am very much not willing to destroy. Don’t.

I’ve seen photos from two separate incidents in the last couple weeks where someone’s holster folded in & caught the trigger - with bloody results.

Don’t knowingly violate one rule presuming that another will protect you. The whole point of Cooper’s Four Rules is that if one goes awry, another will protect you - which it can’t if you’ve already knowingly violated that one too.

Not addressed is back-up carry. Off side ankle on the inside? Thoughts?

I agree. I was using a department store belt until I bought a Cross-Breed carry style belt. What a difference.

I’d rather accidentally shoot myself in the ass than put one in the femoral artery. Small of the back at 5 o’clock for me.

Don’t have a round chambered. Solves that.

The appendix crowd is smug and always talks about how an unintended discharge is impossible if you don’t pull the trigger. But the tacticool crowd forgets...things happen.
Outside of magic “perfection land”, things happen.

There is no escaping that you are violating rules one and two. All guns are loaded, and never let the muzzle cover something you aren’t willing to destroy. And doing so with a muzzle pointed right at your nuts, pelvis, and femoral artery.

If any speed difference exists between appendix and side that affects you that profoundly, you are probably better off examining your lifestyle choices.

And/or manual safety. Or revolver.
I would never carry a Glock style semi, trigger safety only with a round in the chamber.

There are no rules in a gunfight.

I “appendix carry” only.

All of my pistols are DA for the first shot, at least and I am not at all worried about an accidental discharge.

I would never consider it with a SAO pistol.

My experience is that speed is mostly dependent on mental preparation. The combatant who first decides that he is going to shoot has an almost insurmountable advantage. If your weapon is holstered and you are ‘condition black’ (mentally unaware and unprepared), against an already drawn weapon, wielded by someone already at Decide in the OODA loop, you are at a serious disadvantage. Your only chance is if you do something, preferably a couple of somethings, that will break his focus, like fling something at him if you happen to have something in your hand, yell LOUDLY, dive for cover, while unholstering and preparing to shoot.

I am a competent marksman but by no means a CQB expert. However I have survived several attempts by making sure I was the first one prepared for a gunfight. In each case by the time the bad guy had grabbed his weapon he found me training a weapon on him, having already gone to Decide.

I am built like a gorilla, I can’t bring my arms to my sides as it is, add a shoulder holster and I start knocking things off tables as I walk by.

Side carry for me.
