Senator on Hearing Protection Act: ‘Lives will be lost’ (VIDEO)

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, argues in a recent video about potential suppressor deregulation that it would be a danger to public safety.

In a two-minute video short published by the Huffington Post this week, Murphy attacks the pending Hearing Protection Act as a piece of legislative charity to a flagging gun industry.

“It will be a boon to the industry, but it will be terrible for the country,” says Murphy. “Silencers are used to commit crimes. They are used to conceal the fact that you are firing a weapon. There will be more crimes committed– more people killed– if silencers are legalized.”

Murphy later closes the clip by saying, “The gun industry will do better, but lives will be lost.”

The thing is, suppressors are legal, and according to the most recent data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, there are 1,297,670 suppressors registered with ATF under the National Firearms Act. The pending legislation simply aims to remove them from NFA regulation, but they would still be treated as a firearm and could only be transferred after a successful federal background check. Further, individual states such as California and Illinois ban civilian ownership of the devices.

As for their use in crime, a recently released internal policy paper drafted by the ATF’s associate deputy director and chief operating officer Ronald B. Turk refutes that.

“Silencers are very rarely used in criminal shootings,” Turk writes. “Given the lack of criminality associated with silencers, it is reasonable to conclude that they should not be viewed as a threat to public safety.”

In law and order and other crime TV shows, they silence guns by shooting through e empty soda bottles or baby bottle nipples. I don’t see why most killers would care about sound though, because even if the shot is heard, by the time people get to the scene, the shooter is gone.

"Silencers are used to commit crimes."

In the same way spoons are used to make people fat, I guess. And, yet, spoons are still legal and serve a valuable purpose as well. Hmmm.

My favorite is the potato silencer. They just cut a small indentation into the spud and press it onto the muzzle - presto. I remember seeing Richard Roundtree do that in an old episode of Shaft, silencing a .30-06 bolt-action hunting rifle to BB gun sound levels.

Totally realistic < rolls eyes >.

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, is a freedom-hating hypocrite.

Murphy worked overtime to make sure that Obama's gift of billions and billions of dollars to the Iranian mullahs, along with giving Iran a clear path to acquiring nuclear weapons, could not be prevented by the Senate.

Murphy himself is a danger to public safety. From now on, for every American who is murdered by an Iranian-sponsored military operation, or an Iranian-sponsored terrorist attack, Chris Murphy can raise his hand and proudly state, "I did that".

Chris Murphy is all in favor of arming America's enemies, both the state sponsors of terrorism and the terrorists themselves, while being against American citizens defending themselves from attack.

OK... I’m a big 2A supporter, as most on this site are, and I practice what I preach, if you know what I mean. I’m not kidding, and I’m a long-time poster - so cut me a little slack on your responses, please.

I don’t personally see a good use for suppressors, unless you’ve left your earmuffs at home... Muffs are cheaper, and if I’m shooting, I make sure to have them. If you want a suppressor, fine. But it sure does seem like a stretch to justify them as hearing protection. This bill title doesn’t look like a win to me.

Convince me.
