Perhaps younger viewers are getting tired of round-the-clock Donald Trump coverage, as CNNs Debate Night: The Future of Obamacare was the most-watched cable news program among the key news demo of adults age 25-54 on Tuesday night.
CNNs Jake Tapper and Dana Bash moderated the debate between Senators Bernie Sanders and Ted Cruz, which averaged 2.46 million viewers and 932,000 viewers among the key demo. During the time of the debate, CNN beat Fox News by 29 percent in the demo while crushing MSNBC by 124 percent.
CNNs debate kicked off at 9 p.m. ET as news regarding President Trumps executive order blocking travel from seven predominantly Muslim countries was unfolding on Fox News. Federal appeals court judges were expected to determine whether to restore the travel ban, but more age 25-54 viewers wanted to hear Sanders and Cruz argue about health care instead.
Fox News won the night and the time period among total viewers, as the network has done on a monthly basis since passing CNN in the category back in 2002.
But Tuesdays debate ranked above all CNN non-election town hall premieres in both total viewers and adults 25-54. It carried CNN to a prime-time win in the demo over Fox News for the entire night, averaging 782,000 compared to 732,000 for FNC. Meanwhile, MSNBC finished third with an average of 385,000 demo viewers.
Sanders and Cruz were both unsuccessful in their attempts to emerge as their respective partys presidential nominee during the primary race of 2016. Both men were essentially runner-ups, with Trump and Hillary Clinton facing off on Election Day....

Buried somewhere in the article..ya know, to mislead as usual from Fake news yahoo...
Good for CNN.
More people got to see Obamacare and Bernie destroyed by Ted
Fox News went left after they were bought by the Saudis.
Fox Business seems OK for now.
MSNBC of all people is trying to move right (i.e., actually report facts).
What a strange world...
There is a lot of interest in serious matters, when people are willng to address substantive issues. The mainstream Dem politicians seem to be unaware of this.
WABC radio also ran it live, pre-empting the John Batchelor show.
Not sure who did that but at less than 1% of the US population I think its safe to say effectively no one watched it.
In case people think my statement was hyperbole, see http://www.politifact.com/punditfact/statements/2014/jan/06/facebook-posts/facebook-group-no-2-owner-fox-news-prince-alwaleed/
idiot conservatives gave these people a lift. Wrong approach
So, the “key” demographic is only 38% of the total audience? What makes them so “key”?
Advertisers like that demographic.
I watched it. Cruz was excellent. Bernie couldn’t respond to Cruz on government rationing of care.
In fact, Bernie argued all night for single payer. In other words, he was conceding that Obamacare is a disaster.
There are 800 or 1,000 channels now. It’s not 1968 when there were basically 3 channels.
I confess I broke my no CNN vow to watch the debate. It actually was very good and the format allowed Cruz to really use his debate skills against s.anders. It was a win for our side.
As I predicted, Ted ate Bernie alive. Slaughter.
I watched it on YouTube - it was actually quite good. They said they would do more. And CNN did a good job both with the format and the moderators - there wasn’t the obvious bias that normally permeates these events.
Trump beating up on CNN may be having some positive effects and ironically it may end up helping CNN if they take the beating to heart.
