Trump signs order spurring 'great rebuilding' of armed forces

President Trump on Friday afternoon signed an executive order that he said would spark a "great rebuilding" of the United States military.

"First, I’m signing an executive action to begin a great rebuilding of the armed services of the United States, developing a plan for new planes, new ships new resources, and new tools for our men and women in uniform, and I’m very proud to be doing that," he said at the Pentagon.

"As we prepare our budget request for Congress ... our military strength will be questioned by no one, but neither will our dedication to peace, we do want peace."

The details of the order were not immediately clear, but it is believed to call on his newly minted Defense secretary James Mattis — who was sworn in by Trump at the Pentagon on Friday — to execute a national security strategy aimed at “Peace through Strength,” a slogan he used during the campaign.

Mattis will be tasked with preparing a 30-day “readiness review,” assessing what is needed to combat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in additional training, maintenance and infrastructure, according to an earlier report from the Washington Post.

It also allows Mattis to “override” Trump regarding the use of torture like waterboarding of terrorist suspects. During Friday’s joint press conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May, Trump said he would defer to his Defense secretary despite his own support for enhanced interrogation methods.

The order calls for a joint review from the Pentagon and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to craft a “military readiness emergency budget amendment,” which would boost military spending this year and give Mattis the ability to make changes to his agency’s budget proposal for 2018 within 90 days.

One notation was seen on Jezebel, com, written by Anna Merlan on 06/15/16. The proposal to draft was submitted by Duncan Hunter. Hunter didn’t really expect that provision to be adopted, and meant it to be seen as a ‘gotcha ammendment’. He didn’t think liberals would ever draft women. Hunter then proceeded to vote against his own amendment. Still, the measure stayed in the bill.

On Tuesday, the Senate approved the NDAA 85-13, in spite of objections by some, including Ted Cruz and Heritage Action, a conservative advocacy arm of the Heritage Foundation.

I like the fact that he is asking the Pentagon to come up with a plan to increase capability.

The way this has worked in the past is the White House and Congress told the military what they were going to give them and asked for their input on manpower and maintenance.

I think Reagan was the last POTUS to actually ask what they needed to accomplish their missions.

Just because girls have to register doesn’t mean we have to draft them.

However, they can be quite useful and productive behind the lines and back in the states. Innumerable appropriate roles in war time.

I served with dozens of women that were very good at their job and perfectly patriotic. But I could not imagine sharing a foxhole with any of them.

Agree! I recall the whole mess in Fallujah where a soldier was investigated for shooting a “prone” enemy! I don't care if the person is prone or 11 years old - if he pointing a gun at you, shoot.

So there is no law requiring women to register for the draft in 2018. It is may be.

"Need to reverse some of the recent changes beginning with a rule that allows dreadlocks, beards, turbans, or hijabs for religious reasons."

These people should never have been or be allowed
in the military or even the country for that matter.

Get off the NATO Standardization, and design or purchase existing firearms off the shelf, with OUR mission standards as a baseline.

They are rescinded. They stopped following them in December.

When does the man sleep? He had to be planning things out way before the election...”just in case he won”.
