Because they invented it in order to discredit everyone but them.
Im taking the unusual step here of dealing with a two-week old piece of work, but Im doing it because the topic is somewhat evergreen and the issues it presents remain very much at the forefront of our national discourse. You will recall that it only took a few days after the election of Donald Trump for the mainstream media to suddenly start carping about fake news.
The implication was that Trump won in part because gullible people posted false news stories from unreputable web sites that made all kinds of crazy claims about Hillary or other things. One claimed the pope had endorsed Trump. Another claimed Hillary had some deadly disease. I remember one that claimed to have quotes from Hillarys actual doctor, on the record, exposing some sort of scandalous health issue.
Mainstream media = fake news
Mainstream media has been pushing “fake news”, along with fake polls, for many years now.
They have been caught, discredited, and are just lashing out like a mortally wounded animal.
Global Warming = fake news
Cops gunning down innocent unarmed blacks = fake news
Benghazi caused by youtube video = fake news
Etc.
And it took Donald Trump to come along and teach the Republican Party how to do that.
‘Hoist on their own petard’.

And, it didn’t take long to flush out that “expert” “fake news” artist, Dan Rather, who would rush into the current discussion. Apparently, Rather is lacking in self-awareness, or is it that the memory is fading?
Fake news was invented by Dan Rather.
Look over there! A Russian squirrel invaded Vermont!!!
Walter Cronkite had him beat by decades.
Diabetic gym socks....less constriction
they did not invent the term Fake News... Conservatives such as Freepers have been pointing out Fake News from the MM for years...
A freeper posted an article the other day from the “Seattle Times”, a completely respectable looking site (I went there to validate it before posting, and it looked legit to me)
It was an article about BLM protestors blocking a highway, and six people were killed when a commercial van ran into them.
Turns out I didn’t look closely enough. It was not a real site. They had a link at the bottom of the home page that said “Disclaimer” and when you read that, it said it was a “satire” website with a mix of real news and satire, and there is no guarantee that anything on that site was real or false.”
The thread ended up getting pulled by the Admin Mods, which is appropriate, and I certainly don’t blame the Freeper who posted it because it sure did look like a real, legitimate news site.
Two points on this:
First, I doubt it was a conservative site. What point would be gained by a false story like that? It was already reality, that kind of thing happening. (and it is going to happen again) but this one was false. So what is the point? In my opinion, it is a web site run by liberals, who set it up to bring their accusations of “fake news” true...a site they can point to and say “Look! This is an example of a “fake news” site, and few people will investigate. It is the equivalent of a drive by shooting, or as Rush Limbaugh would call it, “drive-by Media”.
Secondly, it was scrubbed from Google. You can find it with the way-back machine, but you can’t find it on Google. Now, I know the next question might be “Why would a liberal corporation like Google want to scrub it, since it fits their narrative?” That is simple, because they said they were going to do it, and it existence would refute their statements. Besides, the existence and deletion of the site serves both narratives, in my opinion.
Well they do own ‘fake news’-it’s all they do but wasn’t called out so much before. Winning is great!!!
Don’t forget the pictures of Trayvon at 8 years old and the Gentle Giant of Ferguson.
Then there are all those Church burnins...
