Once it became clear Donald Trump would become the next president of the United States, enquiries about studying at the University of Alberta began to come in.
It wasn’t a deluge of interest, says Britta Baron, associate vice-president international, but it was enough that people noticed.
And it wasn’t just prospective students putting the feelers out; Deans were also getting queries from academics and professors looking for job opportunities north of the 49th Parallel.
The climate of uncertainty swirling through the United States may not be enough to force American students to reconsider their Ivy-league aspirations, but it will, Baron says, encourage international students, who now face a Trump America with its caustic rhetoric against foreigners, to look elsewhere.
“It’s worrisome,” Baron says.
“It’s creating a sense among international students of, ‘well, maybe that’s not a good place to go and study anymore’.”
Baron says the last time this level of concern was raised about studying in the U.S. was immediately following the September 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center....

I know, I’m from BC. BTW, Alberta may be the most pro-US province as it’s the home of the PM’s who like the US. Home also of the oil sands and infamous “western separatist” movement. Think TX of the North.

People of Alberta are hard working, very industrious and quite self- sufficient. I know this because I have encountered many of them building their second homes and businesses in Mexico. I would not wish this tainted influx on them.
Another benefit of Trump’s win. The lib university snowflake enablers get the hell out of Dodge and move to Canada.
They’ll get a dose of REAL winter and be on the next flight home. The 2 weeks in January where the daily HIGH is -25 will get their attention. So will the 6 hours of daylight.
