Are Sig's 1911 less reliable than Colt or Springfield?

Some of our readers and those from 1911 forum were taliking about whether the Sig 1911 is less reliable than Colt or Springfield. Here's some of the conversation taking place:

3RidersApproaching: SIG offers some very appealing 1911s in terms of features (front strap checkering, rounded butts, etc.) And their pricing is attractive. Relatively few models from Colt and Springfield come with front strap checkering (something that I have, over time, come to really appreciate after having bought a number of 1911’s that DON’T have it.) I’ve caught some drift here and there that SIG quality (perhaps regarding their non-1911 models?) is not so good these days.

mparker: For my money Sig and STI are what I would buy if I were looking for an off-the-shelf 1911 and not a custom or semi-custom.

remanaz: Both my Sig 1911's have ran perfectly out of the box. So have all 3 of my Colts. My SA ro compact had a few light primer strikes before I replaced the ILS MSH. My SA Combat Op 9mm had almost no extractor tension out of the box. Both SA’s have been perfect since fixed.

Minorcan: My Sig 1911 has an external extractor which many claim inferior to the Colt internal designs. Mine has several 1000 rounds through it without a hick-up. I think that is as good as it gets. What more can you ask of any pistol or mechanical device.

Riverkilt: For what its worth…I’ve had two Springers, one full size and one short barrel 1911. Both were nightmares…sent one in to be fixed and it came back from SA with the same problem – extractor nightmare. See the rest of the story here. How about you all, how many 1911 users here?, what's your thought on this?

Anyone unhappy with their Sig 1911 can send it to me. :)

My wife insisted on buying me a Sig P938 (9mm). Shot it for the first time, yesterday. It performed flawlessly!

Yup, I’ve tried Wilson mags and discovered Tripp mags are more reliable. People should recognize that, in general, mags are the weak point in semi-automatic pistols. And for that reason, you should always carry a spare in case you have to dump the one in the mag well.

SA A1 Loaded with factory mags... not a single misfire or problem.
Simply love it.

I returned a couple SIGs with some manufacturing defects (one bought used). However once the fix was done the SIgs were hands down more accurate and reliable than my Colt and Kimber or Springfield.

They do not feel as tight as Kimber and thus are more reliable and do not require the Para or Colt 200 round break in. Right out of the box they zing out bullets more accurately than the others.

Occasionally I see the lightly used with some holster wear Sigs at the gun shows. Usually displayed are several P229’s. They are typically under $400. Great price for a .40 I have one that I’ve fired about 4000 rounds through and it was used when I got it. Barrel shows slight wear from the slide. I also have a Colt XSE LtWt Commander. It’s prettier but I still prefer the DA/SA sig.

Not sure what the metalurgy is exactly on SIg, though, as this article implies.

I was pleased to note that my Colt Deltat Elite has hammer forged steel frame and slide. Aside from its delrin guide rod which can be replaced with a metal one, that is tank built right there.

Picked up an SA about a year ago. Straight from the factory shot a quarter sized ring with no issues whatsoever, crisp even trigger pull, and no extraction issues.

Not saying others aren’t as good, just my recent SA experience.
