Are Sig's 1911 less reliable than Colt or Springfield?
AShooting Journal ^ | 7/26/2016 | J Hines

Some of our readers and those from 1911 forum were taliking about whether the Sig 1911 is less reliable than Colt or Springfield. Here's some of the conversation taking place:

3RidersApproaching: SIG offers some very appealing 1911s in terms of features (front strap checkering, rounded butts, etc.) And their pricing is attractive. Relatively few models from Colt and Springfield come with front strap checkering (something that I have, over time, come to really appreciate after having bought a number of 1911’s that DON’T have it.) I’ve caught some drift here and there that SIG quality (perhaps regarding their non-1911 models?) is not so good these days.

mparker: For my money Sig and STI are what I would buy if I were looking for an off-the-shelf 1911 and not a custom or semi-custom.

remanaz: Both my Sig 1911's have ran perfectly out of the box. So have all 3 of my Colts. My SA ro compact had a few light primer strikes before I replaced the ILS MSH. My SA Combat Op 9mm had almost no extractor tension out of the box. Both SA’s have been perfect since fixed.

Minorcan: My Sig 1911 has an external extractor which many claim inferior to the Colt internal designs. Mine has several 1000 rounds through it without a hick-up. I think that is as good as it gets. What more can you ask of any pistol or mechanical device.

Riverkilt: For what its worth…I’ve had two Springers, one full size and one short barrel 1911. Both were nightmares…sent one in to be fixed and it came back from SA with the same problem – extractor nightmare. See the rest of the story here. How about you all, how many 1911 users here?, what's your thought on this?

IIRC, Sig had some mag related issues with their 1911s. They dumped ALL their mag inventory and changed vendors.

Use top quality mags, and Sig 1911 is fine.

Bet there is no right or conclusive answer. I’ve gone through enough guns over the past few years to realize that there are cheerleaders and naysayers for every brand and model on the market. Some of the “best” I’ve had, turned out to be horrible to shoot, no fun at all. Ones people deride turn out to be the easiest and funnest. Trying first is important—immediately got rid of one after 24-rounds. Had I been able to try first, I would never have bought it. Biggest problem of most recent guns is quality control—guns coming dirty and not ready for use—even metal shavings and all around firing pin on one. Sloppy.

To: 3RidersApproaching....you are a limp-wristed pu$$y.

To: Minorcan.....you do know you can tune the spring tension in a 1911 extractor, don’t you?

AFAIC, a 1911 is a 1911 is a 1911. There’s only price and quality as discriminators. The best 1911s I have (3) are Ruger SR1911s. I have 8 others, including a 1943 original Government 1911A1 Colt and a commemorative Colt 1911.....

They (the Rugers) are equal in quality and performance, IMO. I only own one SIG and it’s a 22....nice gun.

Mags are the cause of most 1911 issues. Get good mags.

You can also adjust the timing/cyclic rate on 1911s with different recoil springs, main springs, and FPS contours. Different weight bullets also factor into cycling.

Unlike most other semi-automatic pistols, 1911s are finicky about mags. If a 1911 doesn’t run, try another mag. Personally, Cobra mags from Tripp Research work best in all four of my 1911s.

Tripp mags are a step above everything else. Really make Wilsons look outdated.

I never bought a Sig 1911 because it wont fit into any of my other 1911 holsters.

That goes for pretty much all semi auto firearms in my experience.

I have encountered this same response on several guns—change this or that out to make it work right. I’d like once to get a gun that worked right as-is. Okay, many do but others don’t and that, I guess, defines quality as I don’t want to be buying guns that double in price by the time I fix them to actually work.

Yes....I’ve got a full set of different poundage springs and a gauge.....however, most of my problems I’ve had re: cycling have been solved with better magazines. I only use Wilson Combat SS mags now. I have a bunch of them and they work great. I keep the original manufacturer mags, but don’t use them hardly ever.

I have a SIG P-220 that I bought used.I have experienced NO problems with that weapon and it fires all .45ACP ammo without problems and it’s accurate as hell right out of the box.

If needed Iwould buy another sig in a minute.

I had 2 McCormic mags that would continually give nose down fail to feed jams. Called them and they said warranty period was 1 year.

I no longer buy anything with that name on it. If what you have works in your gun, stick with it.

My wife’s P238 has performed flawlessly 4 somewhere between 500 and 1000 rounds. I quit counting. The P238 is essentially a mini 1911.

We did have some eject issues with a couple of boxes of underpowered reloads. But all other ammo new or reload has performed perfectly.

The only reloads I buy now are from Freedom Munitions, which makes extremely good American-made ammunition.

Yes they are... and the trigger guard didn't fit in either.

Its a shame. I like Sig, I have a P229 on my hip right now. I really enjoy my 1911s, it just a holster issue with the Sig.
