President Obama Proposes Expanding Social Security Benefits
Talking Points Memo's Livewire ^ | June 1, 2016 | Sara Jerde

President Barack Obama on Wednesday called for an expansion of Social Security benefits, saying that the program was more necessary than ever to support an aging population.

Speaking at a high school in Elkhart, Indiana, Obama noted there are some Americans who don't have retirement savings and those who might not be able to save money because they are unable to pay the bills.

"We can't afford to weaken Social Security, we should be strengthening Social Security," Obama said. "And not only do we need to strengthen its long term health, it's time we finally made Social Security more generous and increased its benefits so today's retirees and future generations get the dignified retirement that they have earned."

Obama suggested the country pay for expanding Social Security by asking the "wealthiest Americans to contribute a little bit more."

"They can afford it," he added. "I can afford it."

If the “wealthiest Americans” can afford it, then why not tax wealth, instead of income?

I need reparations for the inflation of the Dollar over the last 50 years....

And to have capital gains corrected for the yearly (real, personal basket of goods) inflation.

Property taxes, but they are bad enough. No more wealth or income taxes. Consumption only (after grandfathering money that is already after taxes).

except Obama has busted the Social Security bank by giving away “disability” benefits and more goodies.....to millions of people who do NOT have serious disabilities
... just corrrupt graft is all.

(I am NOT critizing anyone who does have a disability and is receicing SS money..... indeed I have long advocated increasing those payments....to be paid for by tossing the fakers and frauds OFF the list...we do this and we will be able to afford to be considerably more generous to those with disabilities who really do need our help). Obama stands for fraud on a mass scale. I stand for an honest assistance program (and a generous one) for those Americans who actually do have substantial disabilities. There’s a BIG difference. )

There has been one SS increase in the last 4 years under Obama’s Administration. My last net increase (SS increase minus Medicare premium increase) was about $21/month. My rent went up $25/month and will increase another $25/month in October.

Adding more participants without adjusting the dispersal rates is rather counter-productive.

Welfare benefits have risen significantly more under Obama.

Cut taxes. That will allow people to save more for their retirement. (Whether they do it or not is another story)

Privatize part or all of Social Security and allow everyone to have their own separate account outside of government.

Neither of those things solve the retirement problem since the biggest problem is many people won’t save for their retirement. But it helps and at least gets government out of the way.

Translation: "I want to squeeze working Americans even more to support non-working Democrat voters who may or may not even be here legally"

Taxation without Representation.

Trump has been smart enough not to put SS reform as a campaign issue. Trump says no reduction in benefits thus taking away an issue from the Dem playbook.

Yes, SS will go bankrupt without reform. In fact, it has been running in the red since 2010. However, unless the Dems join with the Reps on a solution, it makes no sense for the Stupid Party to take the lead while the Dems are talking about expanding benefits.

"wealthiest Americans to contribute a little bit more."

Imagine how much more would be going into the SS Fund, if those 94 million displaced (out of the work force) were employed.

That was what Obama should have been working on these last 7-1/2 years. I made a comment in the live thread of the Republican Obamacare Summit that Ryan, instead of giving a scathing critique of Obamacare, should have stood up and said 'lets make JOBS a priority and then work on Obamacare.' Alas, he didn't.

Gee, if only he’d been president for the past 7.5 years. He might have had enough time to work on such a project.

Leave it to O’Beaver to throw this obvious bank-buster out there, just as a wedge. It’s just in time for the election cycle, and obviously will not go forward; it’s just a great demagogic way of making senior citizens drool over a demwitted wet dream. Probably 90% or more of seniors wish they had an increase in monthly benefits; how better to entice them than with this pie from the sky?

This is crass, despicable and cynical.

Proposing a wealth tax is a fine way to expose the multimillionaire hippies like Tom Sterner, George Soros and the politicians which they own for the hypocrites they are. You don't even need to enact it, just propose it.

BO was once quoted as saying that nobody should be allowed to save more than $3 million for retirement.

Fine, give everybody a $3 million exemption and tax personal wealth above that point. Of course, it is a stupid idea. Your most productive people would spirit most of their wealth out of the country, but it would be fun to make the Democrats be the ones to shoot the idea down since so many of them fit this category.

A consumption tax is effectively a wealth tax, since wealth eventually needs to be spent.
