Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a day of honor and reverence; it is a solemn day. We must recognize an unfortunate fact of life; that our beloved country was formed and is protected by the blood of its warriors. Yet as unfortunate as this is we can be thankful, because over the years Americans have answered the call every time our way of life has been threatened. None understand this better than those who put everything on the line by signing a contract to serve in America’s Armed Forces. Many honorable men and women paid the price with their limbs and lives. And since the end of the Vietnam War, the warriors who died in service to this county have volunteered.

The Memorial Day holiday is observed on the last Monday of May to honor men and women who died while serving in the American armed forces. Formerly known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War from a desire to honor the dead. It was proclaimed in a General order by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. He established May 30th will be the day “designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country.” Therefore a Decoration Day. Former combatants honored the dead on separate days until after the First World War. Memorial Day had evolved to honor all Americans who died while in military service. It became a Federal Holiday in 1971.

What I am thinking about right now on this day in the lead up to Monday’s holiday is that today is the 48th Anniversary of my induction.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Readers all,

As I stand before the Vietnam Wall, I direct you to the panel for the year 1969:

“I say Ye, Andrew Chowka, PFC, USMC. In that year, my friend, and my neighbor.”

This is one of the best of many Youtube Videos appropriate for Memorial Day. It has as music "Mansions of the Lord" (Both the USMA Cadet Glee Club & Ronan Tynan) and "Sgt.MacKenzie" [movie: We Were Soldiers]. The pictures will remind all of us that the cost of freedom is not free!

For the sharpies amongst you, yes, there is the incorrect attribution [begining] to West Point Military Academy Cadet Glee Club, but that is a minor nit in the light of the entire work.

I have always considered myself Pro-Life until now. But Obama has changed my opinion on abortion.

This is a repeat of what I posted to another thread regarding Memorial Day & its difference from Veterans Day.

There are many who, with good heart but some confusion, fail to differentiate between Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day.

The USofA Memorial Day grew out of the Decoration Day tradition that got started in 1866-68 to honor the US Civil War dead. While this was done around this time by both Union and Confederate veteran organizations and supporters, it was, as these soldiers succumbed to age, gradually morphed into its current name of Memorial Day and codified as a Federal Holiday in 1967. The next year, its official celebration was moved to the last Monday in May to make a holiday weekend.

So MEMORIAL Day is the day to HONOR our Fallen. At the very least, we need to set aside some time to mentally thank them for their sacrifice!

Veteran’s Day grew out of the end of World War One (WW1) and the 11th Day of the 11th Month, Armistice Day. Because of its antecedent, this is far more than just a single country holiday as it is celebrated by the British Commonwealth, France and Belgium as a day to honor their military dead. In the USofA, it is the day to honor all of our military, living and dead. Many places around the country still have parades with the Veterans and active duty participating.

FYI: In the British Commonwealth, there is also “Remembrance Sunday” which is the nearest Sunday to November 11th and on both days it is the tradition to wear a red poppy flower!

For him and all of our honored dead and all missing comrades;

Present Arms! - Hand Salute!

Sad to say, a lot of people don't know the difference. The best we can do is to educate them.
