Teacher axed for showing ‘Make Donald Drumpf Again’ video

A New Jersey high school teacher was forced to resign this month for showing his class a popular John Oliver clip that urged viewers to “Make Donald Drumpf Again.”

The “Last Week Tonight” bit, which lampoons presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s ancestral surname, has been viewed more than 24 million times on YouTube since February.

But despite the massive exposure, humorless Middletown South HS brass still pushed out teacher Joe Ventre after getting complaints from a thin-skinned parent who learned about the screening from her child, sources told The Post.

“It’s a travesty,” said district parent Kathi Van Zandt, the sister of musician and actor Steven Van Zandt. “It’s just ridiculous.”

Administrators told Ventre to beat it at the end of the school year, sources said. He agreed to step down this coming July....

Shouldn't he be teaching them to read or add?

No. Much more important to denigrate the evil demon Donald Trump...

Without knowing what subject matter he regularly teaches and the purpose of showing the video to students, one cannot say what he should be teaching.

What a yellow rag! “Thin-skinned parent” “humorless Middletown South HS brass” - and this from the Post...I expected better.

There is no excuse for the teacher’s behavior, nor the way the Post reported it.

If the schools only had more money, they wouldn’t need to base their curriculum on Youtube videos.

I don’t care if the teacher taught knitting

There was a time in this country when we were in a world war. Many German-Americans, in fear of being interred or losing their jobs and homes, hid their family Bibles and rushed to change their names as an outward sign of loyalty to the USA. For years after the war, having a German surname was a handicap.

promoting bigotry -to children- towards someone of German ancestry simply for changing their name to an anglicized version, is exactly the same as promoting bigotry towards someone of Cuban ancestry for changing their name to “Ted” or someone of India ancestry for changing their name to “Jim”.

The school made the right call.

Nothing new here. Everyone knows you cant make fun of liberals.
It could cost you your job and nasty little people will
verbally attack you. Play it safe, make fun of the
conservative. You get away with that because everyone knows
northeastern moderate trumps conservatisum./s

Well, if Steven Van Zandt’s sister says so, I guess we should just let it slide.

I’d have no problem locking the guy up for life.

I’ don’t get why leftist idiots (and a few idiot conservatives) find calling him Drumpf is such an insult. This is the dumbest election cycle ever.

For one thing, Donald's grandfather Frederick Trump (1869-1918) who migrated to the U.S. in 1885 from Germany spelled his name "Trumpf" on his immigration documents and changed to the Anglicized spelling "Trump" shortly thereafter. So this fashionable racism against a white person should have been over for 130 years.

It's about 2/3rds of the way down the top page.

Was it Faulkner who said, "The past is never dead. It isn't even past." The left are anal-retentive past-worshippers, grievance holders, tribalists — always trying to redress past wrongs by holding entire ethnic groups responsible for the actions or their long-dead ancestors, over which today's descendents have no control. It's the antithesis of "progressive."

“To lose him, to allow ONE PARENT to make that decision because she was offended at a TV SHOW, is absolutely ludicrous and you know it,” Van Zandt told Board of Education members in a letter.

Let's see:

If ONE Marine pastes a Bible quotation "No weapon formed against me shall stand" on her computer monitor, she can be court-martialed.

if ONE student is a male-to-female pre-op transgender, all the little girls in the school and for that matter in the United States should have to share a bathroom and locker room.

And if ONE customer wants a gay wedding, all bakers, photographers and florists in the United States should have to agree to supply their wedding or face huge fines or else close their business and let their children do without.

Or if ONE employee is a person of color, no one in the United States may say things like "niggardly", "racoons in the basement" or "he's in a black mood today" without losing their jobs.

But this teacher? That's different.

I understand all of that. What I don’t know is the purpose of showing the video to the students. Without that, I cannot make a fully informed conclusion.

Your conclusion is based on the assumption that the teacher had a nefarious purpose. You may be correct, but you don’t know that based on the information contained in the article.

If he taught “cultural studies” and showed the video to point out the lesson that you just outlined, you might be fine with it. If he taught “media communications” and the purpose was to demonstrate how a satirical news show influenced a social media trend (#MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain), I might be fine with it.

The point is, we don’t have all the facts.

Deserved it - teachers shouldn't campaign from the podium. (Full disclosure: I despise Trump.)

There is absolutely nothing produced, made, or excreted by that doosh John Oliver that has any redeeming cultural or educational value.

My bro in law loves him, and so I have had time to view his product. It is based on resentment, envy, and hatred of conservatives.

It is typical millennial fare, short on facts and reason, but big on emotion, feelings, and “gotcha” type insults.

If I saw him getting strung up I would not stop it. I’d call it justice.
