Mississippi Bill Would Let Churches Create Armed Security Squads
The Huffington Post's Huffpost Politics ^ | March 30, 2016 | Ed Mazza

What would Jesus pack?

The Mississippi Senate just passed a bill that would allow churches to train members to carry guns and act as security guards during religious services — and exempt them from legal action if they use their weapons.

“This will allow a church to have a sergeant-at-arms to protect the church body, just like we have (in the Legislature),” Sean Tindell, a Republican state senator, was quoted as saying by the Clarion-Ledger.

Tindell pointed to last year’s massacre at a church in Charleston, South Carolina as an example of why churches need an armed guard.

Others said the Mississippi Church Protection Act crossed a line, especially since it does more than allow churches to have armed guards. It also legalizes concealed carry in a holster without a permit throughout the state — so-called “constitutional carry” — and prohibits state officials from enforcing any federal gun regulation not passed by Congress.

That last part was presumably aimed at President Barack Obama’s proposed executive orders to increase background checks, among others....

A church assembly is no different than any other social or business club, and for government to differentiate the churches or synagogues is to confer on them a consideration not warranted. If they do not wish to have lawfully carried concealed firearms on their property, let hem post notices at the entrances, or admit members by key or pass-card methodology as exclusively private. hey are just another business, not more or less “holy.”

Current law (in a number of States, not just Mississippi), makes it illegal to carry in Churches/Places of Worship. Our church as a cop who carries a weapon and wears a "Security" shirt, but at this time, regular citizens aren't allowed (not that all obey....they just practice being discreet).

In this day and age, Christian churches should be prepared for the worst, and be able to protect their congregations. This isn’t the America most of us grew up in where you could go to Sunday School and feel/be safe; sadly, things have changed.

On any given Sunday in our medium to large size baptist church I would wager that 20% or more of congregates are packing.

That's probably a bit high for our parish. However, there are two considerations. Under State law, churches are gun-free zones. However, a pastor may grant permission to people to carry in church, which makes it legal. However, in our diocese, the Bishop has ordered priests not to give such permission. So anyone carrying in a church in our diocese is violating state law.

Better to be tried by twelve than be carried by six.

Technically churches here are non-gun as well but I ignore it as do others. Concealed means concealed. Besides in a Baptist Church the pastor works for the members and we own the church, not him.

Luke 22:36

He said to them,

“But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one."
