Should Caucus be a Thing of the Past?

Freepers, would like your opinion. Should selection of a state's candidate by caucus be a thing of the past? Does it truly reflect how the majority of people in the state would vote?

A minute number of votes are cast in a caucus compared to the numbers cast in primaries where the public vote. How is it possible the caucus state results truly reflect the same outcome had the public (instead of insiders) been allowed to cast their ballots instead?

If you look at the numbers, percentages the candidates win (or lose) by do not add up comparing caucus to elections by public vote.

My concern is the establishment being firmly in control of the caucus results (both sides). Is that what we need in today's world where polls can be set up anywhere and electronic votes....or absentee votes....can be cast from anywhere. This is unlike the old days when people couldn't travel for a day or more just to cast a ballot. Is it time for a change?

The caucuses seem to produce strange results which makes the base look like a bunch of loons. I say ditch it.

This year in Utah the primary is online. Should be interesting to see how that impacts participation. You have to be registered, and you get a code from the County registrar to enter the website to vote.

Yes, Caucuses should be eliminated in favor of primaries.

Caucuses appear to me to be too stacked with GOPe representatives, and too open to manipulation and too small a representation of the people. Just look at the polls in caucus states versus the caucus results.

Yeah, the Utah primary will be quite interesting if online. As we know the Internet is very, safe and so difficult to hack....

Exactly. I tried to find how many caucus votes were cast in Wyoming but had little luck. Read a post on anther site it was less than 2000 people. That IMO is almost a crime!

Do you ask this question because Ted Cruz seems to dominate the caucus vote? A caucus vote is not casually cast, so it usually reflects the opinion of the most dedicated, informed voter. The probable reason for them is so long-time party members don’t lose influence to casual or crossover voters.

It is up to the individual states.

However, the circuses which have replaced the caucuses have little if any reality to the voters in those states.

I think closed primaries or caucuses are the way to go.

Well, I do agree with your sentiments. I would only trust a paper ballot for a presidential election. But yeah, it’s not who votes, it’s who does the counting that matters.

[underlines mine] That in itself, should be why caucuses are dumped.

LOL. The “most dedicated and informed”. Really? Who decides the more intelligent voters for this? Let me guess...the ESTABLISHMENT?

You sound just a little (a lot actually) like the Democrats. “Let us think for you since you aren’t smart enough to think for yourselves.”

Yes. And until that happens, the Iowa caucus should be the last caucus in any election cycle.

The caucuses in Colorado have been disasters for the last several cycles. The insiders want to keep them because they have more influence; but public outrage is coming to a boiling point and even the elders of both parties are starting to come around to giving the actual voters a say in who gets elected.

Yes, they should be. One person, one vote, privately. There’s a reason we don’t elect our legislatures, congressmen or presidents this way. It’s not a legitimate way to vote.

“But yeah, it’s not who votes, it’s who does the counting that matters.”

A topic close to my heart. I lived in Florida during the 2000 election. Was a debacle. After standing in line 45 minutes outside, I got into the building (but still in line). I noticed the couple behind me asking one of the poll workers something in Spanish. I noticed her hand them a Spanish ballot. No big deal there. But then the poll worker called in English to another lady who clearly had some authority. I heard the interpreter for the couple tell the 2nd lady, “these 2 can’t read.”. The 2nd lady said, “but you gave them a Spanish ballot.” So 1st lady said, “I know, but they are illiterate.” 2nd lady explained that no....interpreter could NOT read the ballot to them or help them cast their vote. Not legal.

That said who can wonder why Florida was the fiasco it was? Then the good part comes. The RECOUNT. My county had TWO of them. What I noticed was in every recount the democrats gained. How on earth could that be? I have a small clue....

ya....let’s have on-line voting by foreigners.....

That’ll keep things fair and honest....../s

For President, we need in person voting by registered voters, with photo ID.

Absentee ballots need valid reason.

Down ballot grass roots candidates are better served by the caucus system because of the reduced cost. (fewer bought and paid for candidates)
