The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has a map showing the coverage of China's airplanes and missiles based on islands in the South China Sea.
One of China's highly developed islands in the northern part of the South China Sea, Woody Island, has been equipped with surface-to-air missiles and fighter aircraft. These moves have come just as many defense analysts have predicted for years and are likely an indication of things to come for China's other island outposts throughout the South China Sea.
There is also evidence that China is installing a high-frequency long-range radar array on Cuarteron Reef, one of their handful of manmade islands in the south-central part of the South China Sea. This radar type is known to be used for detecting aircraft and ships at extreme ranges far over-the-horizon and can theoretically detect some stealthy aircraft under certain circumstances. It is just one of many other sensors popping up on this island and others, although the existence of such a capability provides even more evidence that China is actively seeking an aggressive anti-access, area denial strategy over the South China Sea....

We had those back in the 1990s.
You mean like the military bases we used to have in the P.I.? The bases that were deemed to be unnecessary and closed under Clinton?
So of course, we must vote for is wife.
MT. Pinatubo helped with that decision as I recall .
Subic Bay is starting to be refurbished.
We have plenty of deep cratering munitions to remove this island bases permanently, should the need arise.
My dad skin dived in Subic Bay and brought up pre-WW2 silver coins that said “Philippines - United States of America”.
Apparently many coins got dumped in the bay when the japs invaded.
So back to Subic Bay then I am guessing.
Subic Bay = Party time in Olongapo!!!!
That sounds like a lot of lucrative contracts and money going down the toilet.
Me love you long time, I think those were the words maybe some Old Freepers heard a long time ago lol.
If you really want to shake things up, put the bases in Taiwan.
That and only order 5 star San Miguel beer in the bars! The enlisted club up the hill from the runway at Subic Bay were very good.
Where there is a will, there is a way, but does America’s leaders have a will to defend itself or its allies in this day and age?
Ferdinand Marcos: “If there is no new deal for the bases(rent) I will kick the Americans out and make a deal with the Soviet Union.”
Uh Subic AND Clark was “Closed” under Bush 41 and Mt Pinitubo AND the PI “Senate/Corizon Aquino”.
Bidimus1 is correct, when Mount Pinatubo “blew its stack” it did a “one volcano wipeout” of Clark AFB. I remember seeing the volcanic ash that looked like it was ten feet deep over the base and it collapsed a lot of the buildings there.
SEND ME BACK! I love it there, Beaches, Babes and San Miguel.
Well I may be a little old for that now... but I am very motivated.
Great Food, Really good SCUBA diving, Sailing, Mountains and Rivers and some of the Finest People on the Planet.
I love the Philippines and would return and live my last days there without hesitation.
Thank you ... That link pretty much sums it up (the way I think), now all I need is an Income and a Plane Ticket.
