DEBRA J. SAUNDERS -- Clinton Should Free The Chicago 2

Debra J. Saunders

1996-08-28 Chicago -- ON THE SECOND DAY of the Democratic convention, as Democrats were celebrating the fact that most of the Chicago 8 had been co-opted into the party, Patricia and Glenn Mendoza went to court, where they faced charges for their protest against President Clinton.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. While Patricia, outfitted with a white dress, white purse and white pumps, nervously appeared before Judge Robert Lopes, Tom Hayden, a former Chicago 8 member who now serves in California's state Senate, was a party man. The free speech crowd didn't show up to support the Mendozas' First Amendment rights.

This story begins in July when President Clinton was glad-handing patrons at a city event. He reached for Patricia Mendoza's hand. She wouldn't shake. Instead, she told Clinton, "You suck, and those boys died." She later explained that she was referring to the 19 Americans who were killed in the June 25 bombing of a U.S. military housing complex in Saudi Arabia.

After that incident, Secret Service agents tried to question the Mendozas, they said, to determine whether Patricia had threatened the president. Words were exchanged. Glenn Mendoza, who served two tours of Navy duty in Beirut, said that he told his wife he thought she needed a lawyer. The two were arrested, held for 12 hours in jail and charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

Initial stories reported that the Mendozas were arrested for threatening the prez. (That's bunk. If Mrs. Mendoza really had threatened Clinton, why would authorities have waited 15 minutes to arrest her?) Yesterday, a Chicago police spokesman said the Mendozas were arrested because they used "words that rhyme with suck" when talking to law enforcement personnel.

Do you arrest people for saying the F-word? "Yes, ma'am," Officer Patrick Camden answered,

The recent news story regarding someone 'insulting' Hillary reminds me of some history of the Clintons and arrest of those daring to criticize them.

Royalty justified themselves by saying that they were descended from gods.

You can kind of see why people would quietly go along with that. Who were they to argue with the children of gods?

But, Hillary Clinton?

Hillary Clinton is a lying, thieving, murdering, greedy, dirty little snot.

She is not descended from gods.

She is, in fact, an awful human being.
