Technology and the 2016 election: Ted Cruz's secret weapon?
Fox News Opinion ^ | February 10, 2016 | John Stossel

Politicians tailor their messages to different audiences. Facing New Hampshire's primary, Ted Cruz talked more about "free-market principles" and a "commitment to the Constitution" and said "no one personality can right the wrongs done by Washington." Politico ran the headline "Ted Cruz, born-again libertarian."

I'm skeptical. Campaigning in Iowa, Cruz had emphasized religion and social conservatism.

But politicians no longer just target voters state-by-state -- they target by person.

Last election, President Obama beat Mitt Romney partly by doing just that. Obama had 50 people working in data analytics. Romney had four....

One of the problems with our political system is academic Political Science curriculum in colleges. It is universally liberal. IMO.

Pretty much every day Ted or Heidi Cruz send me a “personally focused” solicitation for money. Usually it’s a last minute emergency of some kind where every dollar counts to help Ted battle the legions of darkness conspiring against him.

Cruz got a whopping 11% of the self identified independent voters in NH. He’s going to need a lot more than some secret sauce to pull this off.

Oh my........another thing Obama and Cruz are alike. I am absolutely stunned that Cruz would honor Obama like that and use his issues. Sad.

He is not using his issues, just the campaign technique that worked.

Big Difference.

There are tons of Republicans he could use, but he used a horrible Democrat. I don’t like that. Part of the win at all costs agenda he is running. I really wish he would not want it so much. He’d probably be better.

Trump has been very good.   Never asked for money except when he was having his Wounded Warrior drive.

Nothing wrong with using analytics or Big Data.   After all, every time you go to the grocery store, there's a computer noting everything you bought.

Trump has said nothing about privacy issues so far (that I know of) but I suspect he will try to curb the excesses of analytics.  He fired a shot across the bow of Bezoz, the Amazon owner of Washington Post about taxes on the internet, so we'll see.

Why should the internet companies enjoy an advantage over the brick and mortar mom and pop stores?  That seems unfair.

And the click bait ads are absolutely ridiculous on the web and they are driven by analytics.

It's another reason I'm voting for the unbought candidate because I suspect many of the others are being payrolled by the anti-privacy Silicon Valley types.

The stock market is punishing those companies and I think it's partly because people are up to their necks in these quasi-spying operations on citizens.

We’ll have to wait and see if it works.

The importance of this election cannot be understated.

Cruz knows that, and so he is searching for a mechanism to help him win the nomination.

That he borrowed said technique from a Democrat is really moot, if it works.

Well, politicians and raging ambition are both sides of the same coin aren’t they?

Those "tons of Republicans he could use....." are mostly the losers of all the past campaigns!

Why would someone who wants to win, ask losers for their "trade secrets" to ......losing?

If Cruz wants to ask those Republicans who won in 2010 and 2014, he would look to winners like himself and say, Marco Rubio but Rubio lied to his voters to get elected, so best not go there!

Very true. I am saddened by Cruz really. I think he has potential to be Reagan. But he doesn’t play well with others something Reagan could do perfectly......they went to his side most times. He also doesn’t have to be so desperate to win........Reagan didn’t win by doing everything possible to win. His message was all he needed. No trickery. I do admit that running as a 66 year old is probably a better opportunity for maturity then a 44 year old who really hasn’t fully grown up yet. I bet in 20 years, Cruz would be good.

When Ted tailors his message down to the level of the individual, he becomes the ultimate panderer.
