Ted Cruz: Made in Canada
Macleans.ca ^ | Jason Markusoff and Allen Abel

Ted Cruz must long for the day when his three-word memory could suitably summarize his time as a tot in Canada: “It was cold.” He wouldn’t remember, but it was forecast as snowy at -9° C the day he was born, according to the Barometer Betty cartoon on the front of the Calgary Herald for Dec. 22, 1970. ...

... U.S. presidential candidate Ted Cruz spent weeks with a tidy poll lead ahead of this year’s Iowa Republican caucuses on Feb. 1, the first state contest of party nomination season. Then Donald Trump piped up, threatening to derail or distract, as he is wont to do. The Donald rehashed the fact that Cruz let out his first cry at a Canadian hospital. While most legal experts say that won’t violate the “natural born citizen” rules for the United States presidency, the “birtherism” issue has become catnip for some of the conservative voters coveted by both Trump and Cruz.

So the Cruz campaign treads lightly over the first four years of the Ted Cruz story, although it’s a key part of his family’s rags-to-riches arc—the American Dream, just not all in America—complete with a jarring twist ...

... Rafael Cruz became a Canadian citizen in 1973, something he hadn’t yet done south of the border. While he seldom discussed politics or life with Wren, the colleague figures he was happy in Canada. “His business prospered, and he was well recognized in the industry. These are things that make you feel at home,” Wren says.

Connecting the dots ... there was a Breitbart article a while back about the Cruz's being listed on the 1974 Canadian Electors' List. Many have claimed this must have been a mistake. I found this hard to swallow, so I have been digging deeper.

Easton Wren was an Amoco geophysicist who collaborated with Cruz on technical papers and so his close association with Cruz Sr. would mean that he would have 1st hand knowledge as to when Rafael Bienvenido Cruz formally became a Canadian citizen in 1973. For Cruz's mother to be on the 1974 Electors list, she too would have had to have acted formally so to be on that list. Or was Raphael's Canadian citizenship as it was for the U.S., that a wife follows the nationality of her husband and so upon Raphael's naturalization, Eleanor Elizabeth (Betty) Cruz acquired Canadian citizenship through her husband.

The reason I question this is because Ted has said that when he was a child, his mother told him that she would have to make an affirmative act to claim Canadian citizenship for him. First, for a person to claim citizenship for their child, that person must also be a citizen of the country the affirmation is made, so if Betty never had Canadian citizenship, then the Raphael Sr. would have had to have been the one to make affirmation for the child.

So here is the question ... upon the family's return to America, (there is another HUGE problem with that story)did that return to the US automatically cancel Ted's Canadian citizenship and if so, then why, as an adult, since Cruz never formally reaffirmed his Canadian citizenship, why did he have to renounce that which was supposedly never legally reaffirmed after the family permanently left Canada? Was it because the parents had never formally renounced their Canadian citizenship until after Cruz was an adult?

Looking forward to some educated answers here, not political jabs.

A leftist like Trump can’t attack the conservative in the race on issues, so he is reduced to making up a phony birther issue.

The cult followers, who claim to love the constitution but don’t really, all nod in agreement.

And they dig it up daily as if wishing it was an issue made it an issue.

You’re right. Trumpbots are getting pretty pathetic in their lame attacks against Ted Cruz.

They’ve forgotten that the founder of this website, Jim Robinson, has Ted Cruz as his #1 favorite candidate.

Cruz is hardly Conservative. He is owned by the Kochs and a flat out nutball. That is NOT Conservative.

As a child, Cruz would have been on his mother’s passport. According to Earnst Wren, he was the one who took the mother & child to the airport to return to the US as Cruz Sr. was busy working on whatever he needed to do with the business.

I want the issue resolved. If there IS another election, we may end up with a Syrian ISIS member.

Evidence he is owned by Kochs?

What position does he hold because of the Kochs?

Cue the crickets..........

I am not a Trump supporter, I am a citizen who simply wishes to make an informed vote based upon a candidates character. Being honest about ones past has everything to do with a person’s moral character and thus far, Cruz has not been consistent in his stories of his family’s past. And when a candidate seals his records as Obama did, well, if the shoe fits ....

First of all, Obama was never a Kenyan, he was British. Second, one doesn’t need a college degree to understand and apply the US Constitution, which in its language, does define NBC and sadly Cruz does not qualify, however, if he becomes our next Obama, I simply want to be prepared as to what curve balls will come from a Cruz administration.

Immaterial if you are Trump supporter or not.

Conservatives care about facts.

Fact - Cruz’s mother was an American citizen when he was born.

You know what that makes Cruz?

Wait for it.

That makes Cruz a naturally born American.

The fact the birth occurred in Canada is immaterial.

This isn’t a ‘birth challenge’, it is a getting the facts straight that Cruz refuses to clarify. Rather, he has made sure to seal it all up as Obama did.

So to you the word “exclusive” means more than one category such as oranges are the same as fish because they both are items we eat. Yep, you must be very proud of your public indoctrination, so much so, I bet you really like the new common core material.

Lol, I have learned you can’t discuss issues with a cultist.

The Trump cult doesn’t care about law, the constitution, facts or issues.

Trump is right when he says A is B and he is right when he says A is C.

Trump is never wrong, even when he contradicts himself. In fact, he is so brilliant, when he contradicts himself that only makes him doubly right or right twice.

Greatest American ever is Trump.
