Plans for Congress Term Limits Must Be Kept Short and Tight
Canada Free Press ^ | 01/30/16 | Jerry McConnell

The Founding Fathers vision of a “citizen’s legislature” vanishes when the process of reelection enters the picture

How many times over the years have you seen one group or another with a proposal to get Term Limits for Congress enacted? I’d say there were more of those than suggestions for Obama’s Impeachment which should be a slam-dunk. Well, more or not, this one initiated by Americans for Constitutional Liberty is the latest one to cross my desk and while I would like to see a realistic one put out there for a change.

All the ones I have seen just don’t cut the mustard and actually just won’t work; not because they’re not deserved, but they just don’t go to the heart of the matter. Most are presented by a person or group that are too timid and hesitant to go for the bull’s eye. This latest one that I comment on below is that way.

TOPICS: Government; Politics
KEYWORDS: congress; foundingfathers; termlimits

Article V Convention. First rescind popularly elected senators & make them go back to being picked by state legislatures to represent the interests of the states. Then no more than 2 terms in Congress for the people’s representatives. No retirement or out of office bennies - a 401k arrangement with gov’t kicking in a matching amount up to 6% like most businesses do.

One term for senators
One term for Representatives.
No more than that.

In addition, they shouldn’t even THINK of taking up permanent residence in DC. My thought is dorms - everyone has the same size room - or one bedroom apartments.

With modern technology why do they have to go to Washington in the first place, just use videoconferencing.

Repeal the 17th Amendment and you will solve the problem with senators staying in office for 40 years.

Yes, each state should have an “embassy” in DC, and rooms provided for congress critters, and offices there. They should get a stipend from the state for their time in Wasington to cover their other expenses. They should not be allowed to vote themselves any money out of the federal treasury. There should be no junkets, and transportation should be via the military, and medical care at the VA. They should be offices for them in their district and office expenses paid, again by the state. It should be something like jury duty, only worse. This should be a chore that people do for love of country. and a sense of duty. I would like to see the number of representatives greatly increased, and maybe a third senator for each state. Further, in this day of telecommuting, there is no reason why they should spend much time at all in DC. Also, they should never be allowed to be a lobbyist after serving in congress. And we should raise the age to 45 or 50, so that this is not a career. And, all money for election campaigns should come from within the district/state.

You will never change this stuff without an armed revolution. The Feds send too much money to the states.

You saw the screaming with the sequester. Imagine how to states would cackle when threatened with a dry teat.

We should focus on what can be fixed. Take them down, one at a time. A concentrated effort that will grow like a snowball—one or two the first cycle, ten to twenty in the second...and so on.

  1. President, 4 year terms out, 5 year terms in, limited to two terms; Electoral College language in the US Constitution should be strengthened.
  2. House of Representatives, 2 years terms out, 5 year terms in, limited to two terms, and approx 1/5 elected each year. One is at-large in each state (some states still have but one) and elected the same year as the President.
  3. Senate, 6 year terms out, 5 year terms in, limited to two terms, with one from each state elected the same year as the President, the other from each state elected in year three of the POTUS term.
  4. Supreme Court nominees should be approved/rejected by national popular vote.
  5. Language prohibiting un- and anti-Constitutional 'agreements' in international treaties must be added, along with language defining such 'agreements' as a high crime and misdemeanor.
  6. Language expressly prohibiting bans on capital punishment should be added, and capital punishment expressly authorized.

7) If the Supreme Court decides that a President has violated the Constitution to which he/she swore and oath to uphold, immediate court proceedings are mandatory by the Senate without impeachment hearings by the House.

8) The Department of Justice shall be governed by the Attorney General who shall be elected directly by the citizens of the United States.

As far as voting rules:

No “abstaining” or voting “present”. These people are elected to represent us; if they’re not voting, they’re not voicing the will of the people. Only a yes or no vote will be allowed, though concessions will be allowed due to health issues. Failure to vote 3 times will result in removal from office.

A bill may only be voted on as-presented: no other amendments or riders may be attached to it. The voting process may not be allowed to be held hostage because of the wishes of one person.
