Ohio State: students may have ‘moral obligation’ to participate in Black Lives Matter

The Ohio State University English Department is preparing to host a series of events this semester exploring whether its students have a particular “moral obligation” to endorse the aims of the Black Lives Matter movement.

“As the Black Lives Matter movement has grown, students have played a pivotal role in drawing attention to circumstances of structural racism, sexism, classism, and heterosex-ism in our schools and universities,” the OSU English Department said in an email to the entire department Thursday. “To highlight the important role that the humanities can play in addressing these disparities, the Department of English will join a campus-wide effort to plan events related to the Black Lives Matter movement.”

Let’s take Missouri for example, since it was where all of this mess started. First, here are several statistics for you to refer to:

Missouri population:
White: 5,063,097 (83.5%)
Black: 715,504 (11.8%)

Total shootings whether fatal or non-fatal:
Black: 774
All other races: 435
Total: 1,209

Murders:
Black: 255
All other races: 148
Total: 403

People shot and killed by police:
Black: 9
White 12
Total: 21

Why they were killed:
17 had deadly weapon
1 used vehicle as a weapon
1 had a toy gun
2 were unarmed

Of the 2 unarmed that were killed:
1 was black
1 was white

So now that we got some of the numbers out of the way, let’s analyze the information.

Black citizens make up only 11.8% of the population, yet account for 64% of the shootings and murders. This means that although Whites make up a much larger population (83.5%), it is Black citizens who are responsible for more shootings, and thus would be more likely to be involved in a violent altercation with the police.

Black citizens were involved in 774 shootings, and 9 Black people were killed by police.

White citizens were involved in a maximum of 435 shootings (could be less as that number includes all races other than Black) and 12 White people were killed by police.

Therefore, 1.2% of Black offenders were killed by police, whereas 2.8% of White offenders were killed by police.

So in reality, you are MORE likely to be killed by police if you are a White offender than if you are a Black offender.

Now, having said that, the whole movement is blown way out of proportion. All of last year, there was only 1 unarmed Black man killed by the police. There was also 1 unarmed White man killed by police.

So the idea that the police are just going around shooting innocent Black men (or even not so innocent Black men) is entirely false. It is a lie.

They are creating all of this drama over the extremely small percentage of people who were killed by the police (nearly all of which were justified), yet we don’t see any of them marching in their communities about the nearly 800 shootings that took place in the state last year by Black perpetrators.

This whole movement is a sham based on complete ignorance at best, and out-right lying and maybe even Black racism at worst.
