Interesting story. Tell us more. How long did you hold out?
Well, apparently sometime during the third day our parents and the police started to put a few things together. It was probably a combination of things. The smoke from our campfire that was spotted by the helicopter and our fishing hole that my friend had previously told his dad about and then there was the cop that stopped us while we were dragging our fully loaded sled along the snow covered road.
It was really cold, somewhere in the low 20’s, and after the first night we would collect and heat up a dozen or so rocks in our fire that we could bring into our tent at night. That was only slightly helpful. We also moved our tent to under a huge evergreen in order to hide from the helicopter and it also provided a little extra cover from the frost.
It was sometime in the early morning of the fourth day, like 3am, that we heard people off in the distance and getting closer. All we could do was to hunker down and hope they wouldn’t find us. We didn’t know if it was the police our parents or the dozens of volunteers that came out to find us.
It was my dad and his that found us.
Please remember that we were only 11 or 12 years old and weren’t very bright, resourceful, but not so smart.
Made the papers and got a wicked and deserved belting to my backside.
