What Are France's Gun Laws Like? The Attacks Took Place In A City With Strict Firearms Prohibitions

According to the University of Sydney's website gunpolicy.org, gun control in France is categorized as "restrictive." Keep in mind that, unlike in the U.S., France does not have a "right to bear arms" — the right to privately own a gun is not protected by law. In order to purchase a firearm, one must first obtain a hunting or shooting sporting license that requires a psychological evaluation and regular renewal. Semi-automatic rifles that can hold more than three rounds, as well as rifles and handguns with military-grade calibers, require permits. Fully automatic weapons are completely illegal for civilians. If one purchases or possesses a gun illegally, the punishment is a maximum of seven years in prison, plus a fine.

So does that mean the attackers who carried out the Friday the 13th attack obtained such licenses? The answer is almost certainly no.

Self-Defense is a HUMAN RIGHT, not simply an American one enshrined in the 2A.

People need to recalibrate how they discuss the ownership of guns, because they are NEEDED in any society if the HUMAN RIGHT of SELF-DEFENSE is to be preserved.

Could have just as easily been New York or Chicago.

Gun free zones are soft targets.

No idea of what their gun laws are, but remember that they have basically been under siege for a while.

A year or so ago we were getting reports of the riots and cars being burned. That, IIRC, went on for months (and may still be going on — it just isn’t making the world news any more).

Some French jurisdictions don’t even allow the local police to carry arms from I understand.

In this case, it’s not certain that having Michigan’s gun laws would have helped. Although if some of those restaurant/bars derived less than 50% of their incomes from alcohol, one would have been able to carry. The Stadium? The concert hall? Nope.

Except for the massive loss of life, this Paris massacre is no different than the Colorado theater massacre.

Gun free zone, unarmed victims.

The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

France should also make sure they acknowledge the mayhem that train Jihadist would have caused had our brave men not been their to stop him.

He had an AK with hundreds of rounds in a situation where he had his targets trapped and he could have gone car to car. One monster could have killed as many as these 8 monsters did.

The cars being burned have been an annual event in France since 2005.

I’m as big a supporter of the 2nd Amendment as anyone. As someone that has been in the firearms instruction business for a while, training cops, military and security contractors, I will be the first(and only if I have to be) to say that letting anyone and everyone tote a pistol is the answer. I shoot USPSA on the weekends.

I’ve seen highly trained military personnel that can barely qualify...I’ve seen plumbers at a weekend USPSA match make your jaw drop with his speed and accuracy...I’ve seen police officers that have trouble getting their pistols out of the their holsters...I watched a Marine Corps sniper talk sh*t at the dinner table one night, shoot a 162 out of 200 the next morning on the range(160 is passing)...I could go on and on.

My point to all of that. Some guy in a restaurant with his pocket .380 isn’t going to do much. Better than nothing. Maybe if he’s Jerry Miculek. If he is, than there’s a good chance that if he’s not blown up in the initial attack by the suicide bomber, grenade or homemade pipe bomb, or gunned down in a spray of rounds from an AK, he might be able to save the day. Their attacks are ambushes. There’s nothing you can do about that, other than react(if you’re not dead) and pray that you get lucky with your pistol, if you’re physically able to.

These people, for the most part, don’t intend to get away with it. They have no problem being gunned down or blown up. A successful mission for them is EVERYONE dying for the cause.

The only way to stop this, is to get rid of them all. Certainly not import 100,000 or more of these savages. These people don’t have the basic life skills to live in a normal society. All one has to do is drive down one of their streets or watch how they shop. They’re are dirt eaters of the highest degree. All the guns in the world won’t stop that mindset or savagery, unless they’re used to kill so many that they are rendered into full submission.

If they’re not here, in the United States, then they cannot do us harm here.

Maybe the gun laws weren’t restrictive enough. You know, I’ll bet that none of the terrorists’ targets had gun free/bomb free zone signs.

You know that for a fact?

When you have madmen firing with full automatic AK-47's, one need not take a kill shot. Even a shot in the arm would slow them down and allow others to run them, saving many lives.

Not a big fan of .380s, but I’ll take that ANY day over trying to take down a killer with a steak knife!

You are correct. One shot in the arm could slow them down and even kill them if the shooter were that good or lucky.

My point is that everyone wants everyone to be walking around with .45’s and M4s and that isn’t the answer. The answer is to get rid of them. First, not take any of them in. Second, make it so uncomfortable that they leave. If they want to go to Canada, because they want to live in the west so bad, good luck. They have a liberal PM now. I’m sure he’d love to have them. Make, just coming to an American airport so uncomfortable that they stop coming here for any reason. Don’t allow any to attend school here. If they want a western education, make them go to school in England, France or Germany.

If they aren’t in this country, then we wouldn’t have to worry about them. Take away their refugee status(like all the Somalians in Minnesota and Maine) and send their a$$es back to their own country. How about not taking in a couple of hundred thousand Syrians and giving them refugee status, how about not taking in anyone from Iraq or Afghanistan that applies for asylum and giving them refugee status. Keep as much distance between us and them as possible and we won’t have to worry about them coming into a restaurant with hand grenades and AKs.

I don’t disagree we have to kill them all. But if there were 50 handguns in the theatre, that may have down enough to stop 25-50 people from dying. Two guys in a large space couldn’t stop everyone if many had guns.

Something that doesn’t appear to be much bigger than a pellet doesn’t appeal to me either. But, anything is better than nothing.

But, if none of them were here in the first place. We’d be able to eat our steaks in peace.

I hold a lifetime hunting license in France, but never heard of a psychological examination or need to renew my license as it is, as stated, LIFETIME.
