OK tech savvy freepers. Want to get new domain names registered. No games, no upsells and no transfer fees. So, forgetting go daddy, web.com, register.com.... what is simplest and no BS in the process or after registering?

I use 1and1.com. Their price includes the anonymous, private registration.

That’s interesting. How does one do that and register a unique domain name owned by ... me? like a (dot)com ?

try namesilo.com
very easy to register and manage your domain names.
Also consider uniregistry.com which is a Frank Schilling entity. Frank holds more domain names and is registrar for a large number of the domain extensions.

I got mine through earthlink, my isp. No fuss involved, auto renews every year for $20.

Don't know what I keep it for though, want to keep the domain name. I did have a lot of my photos uploaded there rather than using a photo hosting site.

They have web tools, but I didn't find the web builder very user friendly. I did start to do simpler html code in Word and also Photoshop for captions. But websites are so sophisticated now (and messy now that they have to code for mobile), you would probably need to hire a web site designer unless you are up to speed on all the coding. That is expensive but if it is for a business, it is probably worth it.

The advantage to places like GoDaddy is that, I think, they hide your identity better. I was required to use my real id, and anybody doing a whois could find it out. Since I was so low profile, it didn't matter but it could depending on what you put on your site and how many hits you get.

Namecheap.com or Epik.com

Do not use your host.

I like the NameCheap.com site. Their prices are good and they always have a discount coupon for a little bit off. Domain privacy is free for the first year on new and transfer registrations. It’s only $2.88 per year per domain after that.

Yeah, it’s the mobile coding and commercial store/merchant functions that need upgrading in the business. Crikey, what people ask for, for doing this. And bad experiences with godaddy and credit card “captures” and re-charging.

Appreciate the tips I’m getting here, and have to evaluate. A farm is much simpler but other biz is starting to move and require more sophistication. Not a WordPress or blogger page. And definitely not giiigle domains. The data mining is really a pain.

Stay the heck away from namecheap.com. They have no phone number to call, are terribly slow (days to a week or more) to answer questions and needs, and did I mention to cut costs they are overseas and have no phone number? Not kidding. No phone number. Everything is over email.

Outside of a tier 1 registrar few can afford, most people I know use NetworkSolutions.com.

Another vote for 1and1.com. Good price and decent service for the last 10 years.

Well google's web crawler will get you anyway unless you pw protect everything. They randomly collected photos I had in special directories. I don't know if pw protecting them would have worked but it was more on my learning curve, and I didn't want to bother.

Google already got me indirectly. It was through youtube. I refuse to use their browser though. Eventually I will be locked out of many sites because I have refused to upgrade my browser.

Good luck with your site. My son used GoDaddy for his business. Then he started another one, probably put it on GD, too. He got a web designer from Texas to design his site, think he told me it was $5K. He had to upload all the little thumbnails. It had one crazy password.

A web designer would probably do maintenance for you but it would probably cost more. Some others around here would be more in-the-know about it. Obviously if you want to draw business, you can't have a simple simon website like I put up. I liked it though and so did the few people I knew who used it. Why did they like it? No frills, super-intuitive and user friendly.

I used my last bird stamp to send you-know-who a birthday present (don't want to have to ping YKW) lol. Anyway, I usually don't but completed their survey which dealt with web design. I felt there were a few flaws with links, it's not the best-designed site in the world. I had to get some more stamps.

FR I am happy they have kept the same design and not added frills. I'm trying to think of a great website. I guess there aren't any right now. YT isn't too bad for what it is.

I think my problem is I have my desktop from years ago with a large screen. It doesn't seem that most sites bother to code for that now. ABC changed their design, having several articles one under the other seems to be the way to go. WAPO has theirs like that now, too. Now the comments have a pop up screen and videos are screwed up.

Giigle domains lol.
